What is the best cigar that you have ever smoked in this price range?

So far mine is:
Mayorga Maduro Robusto $2.50

Personally, the $4.00 price-point is my "sweet spot" for everyday NC smokes. Low enough price to be affordable, but high enough to hit the edge of the nicer stuff (if you don't mind smoking a lot of robusto-sized cigars). I like all of the following, most of which fall in the $3.50 to $4.00 range when purchased by the box:

- Padron 3000 natural
- Partagas Black Label Clasico
- Torano Exodus 1959 Silver Robusto
- Torano Exodus 1959 Gold Torpedo
- La Gloria Cubana Serie R #5 Natural
- HdM Excalibur 1066 Dark Knight II
- Joya de Nicaragua Antaņo 1970 Robusto
- Punch Rothschild Maduro-Maduro
- K. Hansotia Triple Ligero X3

If I had to pick just one, I'd say the LCG Serie R Natural has the best overall flavor, so that'd be my "winner"....but the best VALUE by far has to be the Punch Rothschild Maduro-Maduro. A totally different animal than the regular Punch Maduro, the little double-maduro bad boy is rich, syrupy, bold, and heavy cigar that rolls in right at $2.00 each.

I may have to try these... I love's me maduro's

Electric Sheep

The Punch Rothschilds come in three versions: natural, maduro, and maduro-maduro (aka oscuro). The sticker on the box clearly says "Maduro Maduro" so you'll know if you're picking the correct one.

This is the correct one:
http://www.famous-smoke.com/cigars/search/stats.cfm/inum/11422

(well actually, that's one of TWO possible correct versions, because they're available with or without cello. But the cigars should be the same, regardless of the cello wrap)

Look at the customer ratings there on Famous Smoke's website and compare the three types...you'll find the maduro-maduro rates noticably higher than the other two.

Can't go wrong at $2 bucks per stick!

Is this $4.00 MSRP or $4 paid? I've gotten a few Gurkha Legends for $4 each on cbid, along with some RP Sun Growns and Padilla Obsidians.

I really like the Excaliburs, and some of those are down on that end of the price range.

"Best" cigars lists are just fodder for entertainment, imo. In any case, here are some noteworthy smokes that I enjoy for $4 and under ...

CAO Italia
Fuente 858, Chateau Fuente, Cuban Corona, Spanish Lonsdale
Hemingway Short Story
La Aurora
Padron 2000, Delicias
Perdomo Lot 23

I was asking for each person's personal opinion of cigars they have tried, not anything from CA or Smoke mag or even top25... I am looking for some input for purchasing possibilities, that is all...

tedski
02-05-2007, 05:09 PM
I understood. However I'm not not sure I understand why you feel opinions here carry any more weight than those posted at Top25 or written in Smoke magazine. (I deliberately left out CA as I feel reviews there are at least somewhat biased.)

Smoke can depend on advert's like CA and top25 well... there is no way to narrow searches down, only if you know what you are looking for can you find what you are searching for... with this input I can go to top35 and get reviews and make up my mind from that... input is always helpful and I take suggestions first from those I know then, mags, catalogs and such... since i have gotten some good advice on here so far, felt I could trust the input... as I have gotten some good ideas for smokes already by this and the cigar reviews posted by others on this board.

I think I can state that since 8-5-8- and Padrons have been mentioned multiple times then these are probably cgars worth trying...

ATCdub bought some of the heming's when he was up here, now you mention them... what do you like about them?

I also love Padron and know your a maduro guy. The 2000 is too strong for my liking. Clay gifted me a 3000 with age and was damn good. I recently been liking me some Padron Londres maduro for under $2.50 each. Think the size is 5 1/2 x 42, like a petite corona size.

I figured I'd get in on this discussion. Being a grad student and a newbie, I have more than enough reasons to know about cheaper- end premiums (no, Phillies blunts aren't premiums... at least to me!)

Anyhow, I prefer larger rg maddies, so this likely reflects that:

CAO Brazilia
Padron 5k (any padron, really)
5 Vegas Series A (add some age and they're one of the best I've enjoyed!)
Sancho Panza Double Maduro
Cu-Avana Maduros (some hate 'em, some like 'em - nice twang/ citrus)
Gurkha Ancient Warrior (depends where you get them - have heard they're more expensive elsewhere)

Just a few that came to mind...

Well it's a tough call on whether any reviews in the mags are totally unbiased ... although I think Smoke does a good job. As for Top25, there are other ways to narrow your search. Check out their Ranking Lists (Overall, <$6, By Country & By Shape) I think in the end you will still wind up trying lots of different brands ... but this really helps you develop your palate.

With regard to Hemingways, I like 'em for the shape, construction and flavor.

Padron 3000 naturals are awesome, but aged they really get stupendous. I think they're one of the very best NC cigars flavor-wise, regardless of price.

I'd love to try and age them myself, but I don't have the patience. :smokingbo

There's just too many in the under $4 range. Let's see if anybody can come up with better than a Sancho Panza double maduro for under $2. By the box these sell for right about $1.80 each.

I would say the Chateau Fuente and the Punch Oscuro (double maduro) are possibly my favorites. Both are good out of the box but both get very fine after six months wait-time.

Thanks.

Uh, well...a box of 8-5-8 (25ct) sells at Famous-Smoke for $89.95, so that's $3.60/stick.

Holt's and CI both list them a bit higher at $93.75, but that's still only $3.75/stick.

Naturally, I would recommend purchasing from our the fine forum sponsor, Famous-Smoke.
