View Full Version : Texas Hold'em Monthly Tourney
Fellers:
So, I will be running a monthly Texas Hold'em Tournament soon (maybe this month?) and a few details need to be worked out. This will be open to 10 players every month with a $5 buy-in that pays for the service, and I would like to keep it open to everybody, which can be worked out later because first, we have to agree on a day and time to do this. So I think we should discuss this, and I'll start a poll as well.
First, we need to pick a day of the week. Second, I feel the selection should remain consistent, so what ever day wins the poll, maybe we should play on the 2nd (1st, 3rd or 4th ?) of that day for every month, i.e., if Sunday wins the poll, we will be playing on the 2nd Sunday of every month. Third, we need to pick a time. I don't know how long these games can last, but I'd figure them to last a few hours....not sure though. Also, timezones should be considered.
Finally, I would like to invite serious discussion towards the entire concept and creation of the Tournament, I'm new . For instance, who gets to play, what time, what should the cigar wager be, types of cigars and anything else that you feel should be considered.
Thanks guys, this should be fun.....

Sounds like you are off to a good start and in good direction, can't wait to play.

Fred, sounds like you have a decent handle on things. I'm not voting in the poll as I'll just wait to see what it ends up as and see if I can participate. My schedule tends to change and is fairly full so I'll just play it by ear. Number of cigars: 5 is probably a good number. Too many more and you are talking a pretty expensive buy-in depending on what kind of cigars.
Type of cigars: Always a tough question, but to make it easy, Totally Hand-Made with a value of at least $x (whatever you decide, again, kind of dependent on the people playing, but $3-5 tends to be fairly standard). Depending on what you are looking for you can always make other...stipulations.
Some further suggestions:
Pay First through third so long as you have a full 10 people. That's standard on most sites. 50%, 30%, 20% (5 cigars x 10 people: 25, 15, 10). This actually ends up as 15, 10, 5 as the winners will usually just keep their smokes assuming you have everyone send their end after the tourney to keep down on unnecessary shipping.
I would also suggest a Tournament Leaderboard on the following concept (borrowing this from another recurring game I'm involved with):
1 point for every player each month (this awards those that play regularly). Then 1 point per player distributed at the same rate as above (50%, 30%, 20%) to the top three places (for 10 players that would be 5,3,2 so the top three would get a total of 6 points for first, 4 points for second and 3 points for third). This way you can track everything and have an end of the year tourney for the top however many players you decide.
As to how long they last, do we know what the set up is for the tourney? Starting chips, blinds and how often they increase? Assuming it runs on the same schedule as most online sit-n-go's you shouldn't ever be playing for more than 2 hours. MOre like 1-1.5 hours.

As to the amount of cigars entered I think 5 should be about right and 50/30/20 payout seems standard.
Also, how tough do you think it will be to get 10 players to play each month? Or should we go with the same 10 people throughout?

Trying to stick with the same 10 will be difficult given eveyone's fluctuating schedules. I know I want to play, but like Jason, it will be hit and miss when I am able to.

It may be a little hard to have the same players the whole time.. Just with the schedule and everything, and the buy in every month..
a six month tourney will cost you $30 in cash and around that in sticks if you dont win...

Count me in. If it can start at 9PM, then it doesn't matter which night for me.

1-2 weeks maybe, but yeah, I would go with that format. That way everyone that wants to gets a chance and you can have some variaty in players.

Sunday is about the only day I can play on regular basis as my PT work takes up too much of my time and buying more cigars is still important to me.
My only suggesting would be if most like Thursday and Sunday, we could host 2 tourneyments: first Thursday 10pm est and third Sunday 8pm est each month.
