An AP news item on Forbes (http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2007/05/16/ap3728808.html) mentions that the harvest of Cuba’s cigar tobacco fell 12 percent compared to last year because of heavy rains.
They also reported hiring 11,700 workers for the next harvest. Have the resulting cigars suffered? Perhaps next years batch will be even better with more tobacco to choose from.

I also heard that a good number of their feilds got black stem (I think thats right). It is a fungus that cannot be treated. I could be wrong about that, but I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere.

Black Shank...and yes it is bad. It rots the root system.
Didn't hear anything about the fields being infected with it......
