About time, but it's still pretty expensive:

Today, Sony confirmed to GameSpot that a fusillade of reports from US retailers had augured last week. As of July 9, the PlayStation 3's North American price point is going south. The next-generation console will cost $499 in the US and $549 in Canada, the same price as the discontinued 20GB model. So far, the price drop is for North America only. "This news does not affect any other PS3 territory," said Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America.

The price drop announcement was accompanied by more unexpected news: The 80GB PS3, previously only available in South Korea, is also headed stateside. The larger-capacity system will go on sale in August for $599, and will have all the functionality of the 60GB model. To help stifle complaints that $100 might be a bit much to pay for 20GB more of hard disc space, Sony is releasing a "limited edition" bundle which packages the console with the off-road racer MotorStorm, which currently retails for $59.99.

The price drop further indicates that, after a slow start, Sony is now aggressively trying to expand its customer base in the US. The move comes none too soon. According to the latest figures from industry-research firm the NPD Group, the PS3 only sold 82,000 units in the US in May, compared to the Xbox 360's 155,000 units and the Wii's 338,000 units. Ironically, the console's predecessor, the PlayStation 2, was the month's fourth-best-selling platform with 188,000 units, just behind the PlayStation Portable's 221,000 units.

Will the $100 price drop turn the PS3's fortunes around? "Even with a $100 drop, the PS3 is still the high-end console," Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian told GameSpot. "But price cuts typically generate incremental demand, and I don't think this situation will be any different. Bottom line, this may not be enough to kick-start PS3 sales into the mass market--but it's a good first step."

It's definitely still too expensive for my taste, especially with the Wii out there.

I'd probably get a PS3 if I had the HDTV and all.

Yup, it's getting cheaper, but not cheap enough yet. I want one pretty badly, but not at that kind of bread.

I still won't buy video games because I know how much time I would waste. About as much as I do on BOTL.

Love the PS3..

and with Microsoft about to pay out 1.2 billion in recall repairs, I do not know how much I would be into getting a 360 right now.. I have a buddy who is on number 5

I just picked up an xbox elite about a month ago. It has a shitload more memory, and it has hdmi ports on it.

Looks like Sony cut the price on the 60GB model to move them quickly because they won't be making them anymore. And after they're gone then it's back to $600 for the 80GB version.

Sony is evil. After their rootkit fiasco, I will never buy another Sony product again.

Looks like they're phasing out the 80GB model. Expect more GB and may'be a slimmer PS3. I'm glad I waited and haven't bought yet.

I recently bought a 80gb model before christmas. I've been buying blue-ray movies as of lately. I have a TON of disney pixar movies and just ordered the Planet Earth set along with the orange box game set.

Did you get the free 5 BluRay movies?

I still have to fill out that rebate form to get mine. Gotta get that done before the end of the month...

For any that don't know, it's very, very easy to replace the HD in the PS3. At any point if I find my HD isn't cutting it I can go out and get a laptop HD and exchange it.

I didn't know that. Hopefully a PS3 Slim will be coming out soon. The original PS3 is HUGE!

Hmm I will have to look at all the paper work and stuff I don't think mine came with a form for free movies. Mine came with Motorstorm though. These things are big and they're heavy too. They're smaller than the blu-ray stand alone players I've seen though.

I did not know you could trade out the HD either. That's great to know.
