I have a buddy that ONLY smokes expensive sticks. When I say expensive I'm talking about anything over $15.00. Well........... atleast I think that kinda pricey. Anyways..
I tell him about these other sticks that were really good that are under $10.00 and its like he doesn't even want to give them a chance.
He smokes Davidoff, Aurora and I think Graycliff's. Are these smokes that awesome?

Smoke what you like, like what you smoke.
Oh and no one ever said you could teach someone value.

Those sticks have their occasions, but for every day it seems rediculous. If you've got money to burn, fine I guess. Some guys put $10,000 rims on thier car. What's the dif, if you can afford it. Not for me though.

Hand him an unbanded EO 601 Maduro or Habano. That would change his mind! Tell him it is a $20 stick.

Better yet, replace the bands of one of his smokes and tell him it's a new size from Graycliff.
It's definitely his loss. He's missing out.

Definitely. In fact, tell him it's unbanded 'cause it's Cuban and had to be sneaked in past customs.

I think that some of the Davidoff and Auroras a damn great smokes, but there are plenty of good smokes under $15 that are also great. I've never been a huge fan of Graycliff's though.

Obviously, a $15 smoke is three times better than one that cost $5. For any type of product, there's a significant market segment that will equate cost with quality and will convince themselves that they've bought a superior item. After all, it wouldn't feel too good to admit that your $50K Mercedes is no better than your neighbor's $20K Honda.

Nice twist on that old saying, I like that one.

Or even better yet, take an Opus and put a JR Cigars band on it. Ask him to just give one a try and give his honest opinion. Be fun to see what his review is.

Yup. In marketing, it's called "perceived value."

I think he's definitly missing out since how many CC's cost less than $10 each? Many regular production CC's that blow Davidoff and Greycliff out of the water are only $7 each when you get a deal from an online vendor. I just got some of the Regional release RA Estupendo's for like $17 each including shipping and I would bet a lot of money they're better than a Greycliff.

Some people think that a $15 smoke must be three times better than one that cost $5 even though it may not be any better at all. For any type of product, there's a significant market segment that will equate cost with quality and will convince themselves that they've bought a superior item. After all, it wouldn't feel too good to admit that your $50K Mercedes is no better than your neighbor's $20K Honda.
I think this paragraph reads better this way. (Like every morning, I drove to work in my 6-year-old $14K Hyundai.)

If that's what makes him happy then who cares what he smokes. His assertion is wrong that only expensive smokes are good, but he is entitled to his opinion. It isn't much different than guys that smoke only cuban cigars. I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you are friends and hang out together, maybe a blind tasting to see what he thinks of a Padron maddie 3000 or similar cigar without the band. You could educate him that price does not necessarily equal quality. I remember one time being very excited about trying some Diamond Crown Maximus cigars and being totally disappointed with them. Total waste of money imo. Others might like them. To each his own I guess.

Got to agree with Kevin. I'd chill out regarding his "expensive" cigars. His $15 price is just a point on a spectrum. Most of you wouldn't jump on the cheap vanilla-flavored Hav-a-Tampa bandwagon, but I've got friends who swear by them and think anyone that smokes a hand-rolled stick is a snob. We all are elitists on certain things at certain price points (clothes, beer, wine, music, etc).
Whether his choice is based on his perception of quality or on image doesn't matter - what does matter is what kind of person he is and if he "brags" about his expensive cigars.

Well said. I for instance, am viewed as elitist sometimes because I will only buy double ply toilet paper. Wo is me for not wanting james brown spots on my fingers.:dunno:

Two items I never go cheap on; Toilet paper and Socks. I stand and sit all day and don't want either part of me sore from cheap products.

If your friend only chooses cigars based on price ... he sounds like someone who smokes more for status. There are many things in life where "you get what you pay for" is the mantra to follow ... but this is not always true for everything.

Yes I do agree with "to each his own", but there is a quote from a movie which chimes in............ "The sweet just isn't as sweet without the sour."

Have you asked him why? We can only speculate and only he can give you the answer.

I see what your saying and I do agree, but remember this thread was questioning if expensive stick are indeed the $hit. Whenever I would tell him I have some very good stick that are a fraction of the price and that he should give them a try he told me the last one he smoked unwrapped on him.
I'm totally fine with him spending that kind of money, but I'm sure you guys would agree that you would take some pride in showing a bud another stick to add to the humi, they might love it just as much.

I live in Utah, so I'm just lucky to find someone to smoke with. Next time you smoke an expensive cigar, save the band and you can pull the old switcheroo on him.

I pretty amazed this thread is still going on. Like I said earlier I think some of the expensive cigar are just amazing, while there are some cheaper ones that are also good. If someone looked at my humidor and broke it our on a per stick price I would probably be shocked. I don't think this makes me a snob, but I smoke what I like and since I don't smoke every day I want to make sure every time I smoke I have the best cigar for that situation.
