I was taught to use wooden matches when lighting my smoke. I have also been hearing all this hype about lighters. Whats the deal? What do you burn your smoke with?

I use a torch lighter. I toast the end with it first and then light it up. The torch lighter is a clean flame and offers the ability to direct the flame to any unlit portion easily. Thus allowing you to light the entire foot evenly right off the bat. Also wind is no longer an issue. If you want to try one out, look for a ronson at CVS. That and a can of butane can bbe found for less than $10

I like using a match, but I have a butane light for the windy days.

I am only a fan of the long cedar matches if I can get them, but I have been known to rip up an old thin cigar box to use that cedar to light my cigars. The flame is gentle and forgiving.

An "odorless" triple or more refined butane lighter is good to, I also own them.
They are great and not dangerous to ruining the taste of the cigar, as regular lighter fluid leaves a taste at first. The only draw back is that many produce a "torch" flame, kind of like a blow torch and greater care must be used in lighting the cigar. Took me a little while to master the settings on my Xikar lighter and the burn on the stick.

Overall the lighter is much more convenient and fool proof once mastered. I only use the cedar when I have friends over and want to gently light a expensive stick. You can't match the lighter in correcting burn and applying touch ups. I would go to a store and try some. Some of the lighters (usually more expensive) produce a near flame like burn as opposed to torch.

I actually like to use metal matches as opposed to wooden ones. :dunno:

But really, tho, I'll use whatever I've got. Except a stick from the campfire. Did that once and once was enough! Really makes your cigar taste like shit. My weapon of choice is usually a bic, because torches don't work at my parent's house in the Springs (7200 feet). But I'll use torches down here in Greeley, or a bic, or matches, whatever's closest to my hand!

I use the same method as Dave. I have an Xtend that works great every time! I used to use cedar matches, but they are harder to carry when you are out and about.

Most always a cedar strip.

I don't have enough cigars wrapped in cedar or any cigar boxes that have them, or I might use them more often. That is how I light when I'm at the lounge.

Always used butane, the past 2 weeks, I have been trying and liking matches... even though it takes me 2-5 matches to light one. SOme sort of classic... cool feel to using a match.

Can you believe, I bought a single at the Cigar Inn, upper east side, pish fancy place, and the dude who owns it, offers to give me a light, and the guy goes to light me up with a bic lighter.

I have less burn issues with a butane torch.

I use lighters because when you lose your own, just about everyone else has a replacement for you. I do have the problem of only lighting a portion of my cigar sometimes, and then I have to fiddle with it longer than I want to get it all lit.

I'm too hard on the matches. I can't get many lit without breaking half the box, lol. I'd like to buy one good lighter I can refill easily. Any suggestions for me?

I use a lighter almost exclusively since I smoke outside. On the rare occasion I'm smoking inside (at a B&M, etc) I'll use a cedar strip or wooden matches for fun.

As long as you don't scorch the end of your cigar when you light, you're fine using whatever. Just be careful with zippo fuel or paper matches, if you're not careful, you'll be tasting lighter fluid.

If I'm at work, or on the road, I'll use the torch lighter. If i'm relaxing or have all the time I want, I'll go with Matches (the lighting, turning the cigar, puffing is all part of enjoyment)....

Nibo has some fairly good but reasonably priced lighters. since I lose lighters easily, I have a hard time paying a lot for one. Watch out for the 2 and 3 jet torches. They are very effective but believe it or not, you can have too big of a flame.

Since I never pass up the chance to use fire or explosives, I have a hard time reconciling my self to my previous comment.

Just don't use a zippo. The odor the fuel leaves is very distasteful. I have a blazer insert that I use in a zippo "shell" so to speak.

Having used a Zippo for 25 years to light my cigarettes, I've become rather fond of the taste/smell of lighter fluid.

I meant no offense to you. However, using a zippo for lighting a cigarette is different from lighting a cigar imo. I may be wrong but I don't think there are people that try to find taste differences in different years of tobacco production for their Marlboros. I find that the lighter fluid gets in the way of tasting and smelling those differences in the cigars. Again, I mean no offense and if you like it or don't mind it, who am I to tell you otherwise.

It's kind of like guys who use lighter fluid to start their bbq. I can taste a difference when fluid is used to start the flame when tasting the cooked meat.

At home I prefer a soft flame lighter and a calm enough day that the flame never touches the cigar. The only problem with a torch is that I sometimes char the foot accidentally, that being said, I always carry an Xtend. When traveling I carry an old Colibri Junebug torch, cause it's all plastic and won't set off the metal detector.

Wal-Mart carries the Ronson Jet Lite torches for $3 or so, I think. They're very solid lighters and I have recently started using one quite a bit.

Bingo! Bought a couple of those Ronson lighters for $5/ea. after soliciting advice from my leafy brethren.

My preference is wooden matches.

But most of the time I use my Blazer Torch. Wooden matches definately give a better smoother light.

I use a butane lighter also, just bought a new one. A wolf brand lighter, works very good so far.

For me, it's a torch lighter all the way. I love the precision of the torch, especially for touchups.

I have used everything, from matches to lighters to an alcohol burner fueled with Everclear. It is all mostly the same if you use the right technique, but the yellow flames, match or Zippo or Bic, add a subtle flavor to the smoke. Not necessarily bad, (look how many people use cedar) but different. Torch lighters are great. I mostly use a triple. The flying ban stopped me from carrying a lighter on planes for a while until Colibri invented the Tranzpak, but that's a non-issue now.

I use a Colibri triple jet with a cigar punch on it, and with the Tranzpak it's all I need for traveling too. Always carry matches just in case. In checked baggage, natch.

I also use a torch. Occasionally I will use a match.
