View Full Version : Does anyone have pictures of a beetle problem?

I opened my humi today to check things out, and decided randomly to pick up a few smokes just to smell them since smoking weather is very near. When I picked up one of my sticks, I saw something that I thought could be a small hole, and I have read small holes=beetles. Now, since I am a n00b to this hobby, I have never been exposed to such an infestation, and have no idea what to look for.
Does anyone have pictures of an infested stick so I know what to look for? I can try to get a picture up in a little bit, but it may be kind of hard to capture what I am talking about.
Thanks!
-Matthew

You good man, that is just a dent or nick. If you have a beetle hole, it will look like a drill went right through you stick. I you know what termites look like when they eat through wood, it's kind of like that. Another sign will be powder in the box, or coming out of the foot when you tap on it. Not tobacco pieces, but dust. This is the beetle poop.

You good man, that is just a dent or nick. If you have a beetle whole, it will look like a drill went right through you stick. I you know what termites look like when they eat through wood, it's kind of like that. Another sign will be powder in the box, or coming out of the foot when you tap on it. Not tobacco pieces, but dust. This is the beetle poop.

OMG, if I opened a humi and saw what the owner of those Padrons saw, I might still be in the ICU. There's only so much one's heart can take.

That's a classic pic from Andrews site. And I agree with jkorp, if you have beetle holes, they are very clean holes, like he said, almost like they drilled through the wrapper.

I know, I hate looking at those pics. But it's a reminder how serious you have to be on both ends of this hobby, obtaining and then protecting. You don't want to sink $1000's into feeding some damn bugs.

Ouch.
I found my first trace of beetles a few weeks ago.
Bought a cello wrapped stick at a B & M. Got it home, took off the cello like i always do and inpsected each stick. Found one that had a strage hole in it that wasn't a nick or dent...this was a hole. I immediatley phoned the b&m and told them to check their box for more. They found none. I cut open the stick to check it out and found nothing but a small tunnel.
First time i've ever seen that. Obviously i threw that stick out plust the 2 others i got from that box. Mama always said, "better to be safe than sorry."

B&Ms don't like confronting mold or beetles. They tend to cover it up. I've had a shop out here see the dead beetles in the box and ignore the problem.

This one just freaks me the hell out: http://www.vitolas.net/displayimage.php?album=25&pos=23
All of those evil little bastards all cooped up for so long that they turn a tubo into powder - can you imagine opening that thing and dumping it out in your hand?
I had some beetles in a few NC's about a year ago and I still throw up in my mouth when I think about it. I'm going to take a shower.

I guess freeze freeze freeze knock on wood haven't had a problem with any of the boxes I've put through the freezing process though there was this one box of HdM Epicure#2 that I didn't freeze and have lost recently to the evil above.

Beetles can be a slight problem but your sticks look okay from what I can see. -Sketch-
