I have been pondering how to properly toast a Tatuaje Black label. With that shaggy foot it just tends to burst into flames.

If it bothers you, try a soft flame lighter Chuck. I didn't really experience the problem you are talking about. I hold my torch pretty far away from the cigar to more heat it up than light it. Otherwise the wrapper starts to get charred.

I used a cedar strip last night and the extra wrapper on the foot just burned up and everything lit just fine.

Pardon the ignorance, but what's a soft flame?

I pull the loose wrapper out a bit from the foot, and poof it goes up in flames even with a regular lighter. If you want a great table top soft flame, look at this thread, I've fell in love with this thing, I even travel with it. Eats butane but worth it.

I love using a cedar strip to light my cigars as it gives it just a little boost but when they aren't available I use my torch and just take my time heating the foot. It's all about the ritual for me and the wife thinks Im partially insane as she sits there and watches me light my cigars ever so patiently. I think her last retort was that I take more time lighting my cigar than I do lighting her,,,uh,,,well, she might be right!!

I just ignore the fact that it's there and toast it like i do any other cigar.

As for the balck char that can occur, I recently discovered if i hold the foot end up, as opposed to the cap being higher, it keeps it form getting charred. I used to hold the cigar "down" so the foot was lower that the cap, and i always got at least a 1/2 inch of char,, what with the flame running up the cigar and all, but now, with my new revolutionary lighting practice, i get zero char. I have yet to try using cedar. Maybe tonight.

Just remember to wait until the burst is out before blowing on the cherry........if you don't, it's rough on your eyebrows.

I get very little char, I hold foot down at about a 45 and keep the flame from touching the cigar. Let the heat light it, not the flame.

I know that there are dozens of theories, but I prefer lighting with cedar more than anything else.

Do everyone a favor and never light a cigar with a Bic. If you ever want to know why, purge a Bic and sniff what comes out. It's not a friendly odor. I've shit sweeter than that smell.

I've never had a problem toasting a Black label like normal with my torch.

AFAIK, Bic's use butane, just like our torches. Canned butane has a fairly unpleasant smell, too. I always carry a small Bic as a back-up in case my regular lighter runs out of gas, and it's often my only lighter when I fly. I have never noticed any kind of problem, odor or otherwise, other than the fact that I wish they still had an adjustable flame.
