View Full Version : How about this idea?

Since it has proven that we are a bunch of civil adults here...well for the most part, how about this idea.
A topic of the day.
Every day at mid night we post a topic and everybody here is given 24 hours to post thier thoughts and ideas on that matter. At the end of the day the topic is locked and you go on to the next topic.
It does not have to be anything serious. It could be a ginger/mary ann debate. A over/ under toliet paper discussion. You get the idea.
Could even go two days or a week. Set the rules and time frame in advance.
But to me 24 hours is enough time to beat a dead horse. :smokingbo :smokingbo

What's the reasoning for voting on the topic again?
Oh yeah, one other thing. Are we 100% sure we want guests browsing to see the flame wars that may erupt?

The point up for debate will be forgotten by then.
What's the reasoning for voting on the topic again?
Oh yeah, one other thing. Are we 100% sure we want guests browsing to see the flame wars that may erupt?
1. How will it be forgotten? The thread will be running here. Once the 50 required votes are reached, it will be locked and the forum created.
2. Voting again? If you mean the poll, then it is easier to see how many have voted. If you mean voting in general, it shows that a large portion of members support the forum. If the voting wasn't incorporated, you will be sitting in a room all by yourself called "Todd's Playground". Now would that be fun? :smokingbo
3. It will be a no flaming zone. Not sure where you go the idea that it will consists of flame wars. Even the author of this thread (John) commented on the civility of this board and that is what inspired him to start this idea.
In regards to the 50 votes...there must be a guideline that makes this challenging. If it is to easy to reach then that defeats the whole purpose of the "voting" system. We do not expect to have an idea reach the goal in a day...that's the whole point. If it is truly desired by the members of this board, then we guarantee you that 50 people will vote for it.
David

If and when it is up and running, there will be no voting on what topics/debates occur.

I initially voted Yes for this and now feel like it might just Be another way to generate anamossity(sp) amongst members. I too have seen a seemingly civilized thread Spiral directly into the Gutter and leave no one untarnished. I've also seen BB's with debate rooms, go completely unused.
I too like a good give and take, but frequently many People only know how to "Give" and Then don't want to "Take". It's a sad thing when Member on Member bashing occurs and I feel We all could easily survive with out it.
How about a Warm Fuzzy Room or Puppy Pictures Room(Pet Room, bragging Area) Or a "Happiness is a Warm Gun" trading card Room?:p
You get my point, usually the Potitical extremes clash with no resolution and no results, except that Two more Brothers are not talking to each other anymore. :(
One of the Main Things I love about this Smaller Board, is that It's NOT Like the Other Boards.

I have only seen one thread go real bad, well it was two threads , one an offshoot of the other :shame: (SORRY! O.K.)
After that "incident" I spent some time reading about that person and talking to a friend of his and finally pm 'ing him about things, I see him differently.
I had thought we were opposites but the truth is we are cigar smokers
I think this group can handle a debate and I dont think most discussions will be earth saving matters. A coke vs Pepsi, a snickers vs milky way debate will come about many times over.
I think you can state your opinion without starting with the line..."you are an idiot and let me tell you why you are an idiot"
I am all for the debate just no personal attacks.

If/when this does happen, you probably should keep the sub-forum not visible to unregistered readers. There are some people out there that will search for that kind of stuff just to spam political messages and not really participate in the rest of the forum. Keeping it private means BOTLs can enjoy having a debate with eachother, without people who aren't even interested in cigars coming just to post there.

Good point, and as such - we will be initially opening the politics forum only to those who have voted yes in this poll. Then we will have it setup so you can subscribe at your discretion. While we have almost (and eventually will) get the 50 needed votes I can not turn a blind eye to 20% of the communities 'No' votes.
I think the way we will have it setup (1 day limit and lock, new topic everday, etc) is better than any implementation I've see so far on any forum. Long, overdrawn political discussions is usually when it starts gets too personal IMO. With those concepts in place then I could easily support the measure.
My previous concerns were rooted in the "Fire and Forget" mentality of other places. If the above stated watch guards were in place then the previous Outside Flamer or Poison Pill factor would be neutralized, for a large part.
The Coke vs Crack debate not withstanding.

Somehow I had gotten the impression the idea for the room had somehow moved to more of a simple forum that would be used for debate on any controversial or not-so controversial (mary anne v ginger...I mean come on, is there really a choice there?) topics.

As the original thread, it won't necessarily be just limited to one day (that was just an example). Maybe we can have each topic locked if there's been no response in the past 24 hours of each given topic. :dunno:
And it's not about not giving everyone enough credit, it's about moving on and helping curb a free-for-all attitude on beating a subject to death. Make your argument on the subject and move on. When things start drifting from your opinion vs. another's opinion is usually when debates go to a hell in a hand basket.
In any real-life formal debate, you do have time limits so I do not see what the problem is. I'd rather see each topic presented by moderation and a limit rather than having to moderate any discussion.
And while, yes most of the past debates have been mostly civil I have received private concerns from other brothers over them before. And they have always been the most heavily moderated threads.
