From what I understand doing this to VBulletin allows some posts to be crawled by google and other search engines which would help with Search Engine ranks.

I believe this was written for vB2? Starting with vBulletin 3, there is an Archive (http://www.botl.org/community/forums/archive/index.php) where search engines can pick up non-dynamic generated pages of all the threads.
