View Full Version : BOTL visitors on Google map
This is pretty cool: http://www.gvisit.com/map.php?sid=0151a7ea5810fbb5f801efc63833eb7a (updates hourly). Displays visitor location on a Google map for hits on the main site and the forums.

It is cool, but in this information age, i wonder if it might be used for purposes that invade someone's privacy...

Allan, with the right skills way more than the zipcode our ISP is on can be obtained rather easily. You really shouldn't worry about it.

I prefer to be anonymous...as much as possible...;-)

There's no worries. It only lists the city and state and doesn't uniquely identify any visitor.

I prefer to be anonymous...as much as possible...;-)I understand, but being online is broadcasting more than you would think.

Eric...it's making BOTL as slow as dial up on my broadband!!!
Confirmed that it's the cause of the recent slow load time.
I've removed this feature, permanently. Sorry for the inconvenience.

It only uses zip codes. It will be on it's own page for now, but I eventually plan to have it integrated into the memberlist page. Additionally, in the future there will be a optional profile field in which you put in your zip code and it will pull from that. Standalone should be done in a day or two.

Awesome!
Alright guys, here we go. Please report all bugs in this thread.
Known issues
If you want to reload the map after submitting your zip code, please re-enter the url instead of hitting the reload button, as it will make double markers.
U.S. zip codes supported only. I'll be adding Canada and UK support in a future release.
No validation of zip code.
No file lock while writing xml.
