View Full Version : Do you purge?

Curious to see how many Bothers do this.

The idea of purging is to get rid of the smoke that gets trapped between the ash and the head of the cigar by carefully blowing it out (the reverese of drawing ). Some beleive that this smoke can get "stale" and can adversely affect the flavor of the cigar. Purging this smoke allows a more pure, true taste of the cigar's flavors.

Yes?
No?
Thoughts?

Yes. I do it to cool the cigar when it burns to hot.

i ceertainly do if I feel the cigar has taken an ugly turn, also if I've got to stop smoking and won't be back for a while. So I purge it to get the old smoke out og the stick before it goes out. It make the re-light much better.

I do if I feel a blockage or the draw has tightened up.

Usually towards the end or any time the burn is crooked.

I generally smoke a cigar slow if I have not smoked it before, with my regular smokes, sometimes a bit faster. I never purge, not by a pre planned method, I just smoke the cigar. I have wanted to try the Gordon Mott blogged three match method of lighting the cigar before clipping it, interesting story, just keep forgetting to do it upon light up, I have never worried about stale smoke in the cigar.

Lately I've been purging more frequently during the 2nd half, as I smoke quickly and find it helps maintain flavor and keeps it from burning too hot

I will if the stick is harsh or burning hot. Mainly if I am not enjoying a stick I'll give it a blow and see if it improves.

Of course I do! Ever heard of the Night of the Long Knives? Has me name written all over it!

I'll purge if it gets hot or bitter, it goes out, I let it go out, etc... Sometimes it has a profound effect on the flavor or 're-light-ability', other times there's no effect at all.

I do something similar with a pipe once in a while: when it captures a bit too much moisture a few short puffs in repitition usually help stop 'gurgling'... Of course I'm not 'purging' as hard lest the coal launch across the room...

I always purge when a cigar starts getting bitter, usually in the last third. Sometimes I'll have to do it multiple times. It often makes the cigar taste much, MUCH better.

Purging is probably one of the 2 most important things about cigars I've learned on BOTL!

i do, when it needs it (too hot, and/or tar buildup). never heard the 'stale smoke' reason...

I do on occasion...I feel it makes the smoke less harsh sometimes if it's burning too hot or the flavor is not where I want it to be

I def do, esp if I have to relight. It also helps cool the smoke down if it gets too hot.

I do between every couple of puffs. For me it seems to keep the flavors more fresh.

Btw, I see a lot of guys saying they do it when it's too hot. If you blow for more then a second or 2 it actually increases the burn/heat a lot.

A guy posted a great blog elsewhere a while back explaining this topic. One of his comments was how he uses long purges to heat the cigar to fix a uneven burn. When I try that it works about 75% of the time.

I first tried that when I was out of matches and my stick started to go out ... it totally works!

It helps me get a better draw on a tight cigar.

I have started to do it at the end of a cigar if they start getting bitter. Helps sometimes and other times nadda.

Try massaging the caps end. Sometimes the heat and moisture simply swelled the tobacco.

I purge only if I let the stick go out/have to leave it or when it gets bitter near the very end. My cigars usually don't burn too hot though as I'm a slow smoker.
