What is a good entry level lighter for an occasional smoker, and what should I expect to pay for one?
I have seen all different types of lighters: zippo's, torch lighters, 2 flame torch, 3 flame torch, 27 flame torch... :riflefire

What is a recommended supplier online for these?

I really don't know one but Google will turn up some good hits. Under $100 is a good deal.
I like Bargain Humidors for accessories. One of the guys the works there or runs it irks me a little but I haven't had bad service yet.
Oh and yeah, some might say I have an unhealthy affinity with posting here. :hysterica

I have gone back to my 5 dollar cheapo new york city sidewalk dealer lighter I have been using for a few years because my Z-plus zippo insert decided the trigger doesn't want to ignite anymore. I press it and I get nothing... no clicking sound just a hiss of fuel

I bought a nice Colibri Quantum for under $50 shipped from Mydiscount lighter.com. Works great and has a cigar cutter built it so I don't have to carry a lighter and cutter if I don't want to.
I started with a cheapie refillable butane but quickly learned you need to spend a little more for quality. I should have known better.

I too would vote for the S. T. Dupont Xtend lighter. I have one and just ordered 2 more I like them so much. The only problem is based on the cost of them I'm not so willing to take them out to an event for fear of losing it. For events I take a $10.00 triple flame that I got. It works great. The Xtend I use around the house outside or at a friends.

I have a couple of the Blazer inserts in some venable old Zippos I just can't seem to stop wanting to use. Ones and old black zippo and the other is a nice stainless steel with my initials on it my daughter gave me some years back.
I'm looking for a nice soft butane flame lighter. Anyone have one of these?

If your just the occasional smoker find something that makes a flame. A butane tourch lighter works great once you figure out how not to torch the crap out of your cigar or face. I normaly go with the good old matches because I can harly ever find my lighter and matches seem to be scatered around my house.

My go to lighter used to be a Corona Old Boy (soft flame, actually a pipe lighter) but lately I've been using the heck out of a PB-207 torch. It's an awesome lighter that will light dozens of cigars between fillings. They're somewhat difficult to obtain in the states thanks to some new regulations, but you can get them from overseas: nextcigar usually has them for around $20.

Yeah I know what you mean. I have a Colibri with a window and can't tell where the level is. I can't figure out if you read it right side up or upside down. Go figure.
The Blazers are real nice. I have the big torch and would like to get the little one from viper139 too.

Yup. Nibo makes some nice-looking, cheap knock-off's of the traditional roller lighters that look like high end Dupont's, Dunhills and Cartier's. I have one and it works great. In fact, I have been thinking about getting another. If you can't find them at your favorite e-tailers, just go to ebay and search for Nibos under the cigar lighter part of tobacciana.
Here is my new favorite. Cheap, lights as good as any other torch, good fuel capacity, and they have been reliable. doesnt hurt that i sell them either. best deal that there is on a lighter.

I don't know what you mean by soft...
The best Butane flame lighter in the world is the Corona Old Boy, imo.
Of course, it's a pipe lighter, so it has a tamper instead of a cutter. But it does something a lot of lighter don't do--produce flame when you need it. Every time. For years, and years, and years. They are as reliable as a Zippo, without the stink.
It also has old fashioned style, and a large capacity.

I have the pewter pipe shapes one. They didn't have the Sillems back then, but man are they beautiful!

I bought 2 from him, and they work great. Most cheap torches that I've gotten have lasted about a day (ok, maybe a week). These are still working perfect 2 months later.
Of course I don't use their fuel. I use Vector.
i had my doubts about them until i bought a few and tested them. This lighter has been as reliable as my xtend.

A soft flame is the kind of flame that all lighters made until torches were invented. Think of the flame from a Bic or Zippo.

Definitely a great lighter, but it's a bit bulky for my pocket, and at $30-$40 I'd cry a lot more if I lost it than if I lost my $4 Ronson. :eyebrow:

Make sure you get some corona flints. They are softer, and therefore easier on the mechanism.
Any triple refined or better fuel will do. Although, I once saw a thread somewhere where some guy did a test, taking two brand new Old Boys and filling one with premium fuel, the other with Ronson, and using them both. I don't know the final outcome, but three years later they were both still going strong.
Far as I am concerned, the Old Boy is the best soft flame made. I've always thought they should make a cigar edition, with a punch instead of a tamper.
I exclusively use Vector fuel in all of my lighters and I was hoping that cupojoes would send extra flint, they don't. I'll just have to buy more.
These lighters are replicas of old Dunhill and Savinelli lighters, though I've heard they've lost nothing in the translation.

... Is the S.T. Dupont still the way to go with torch lighters? How about Prometheus?...
It all depends on what's important to you and what your budget is. Both are pricey, and there are lighters on the market that work at least as well, are at least as dependable, and hold more fuel. E.g. the Blazer PB-207 or the version that I have (CG-001), which is the PB-207 inside a slightly different case. But they are plastic and don't have the same cache or curb appeal.
OTOH, the Ronsons that you can get for about $4 from Ron at cigarsolutions or Wal-mart work pretty damned well and look like the cost about 10 times what they do.
It all comes down to how much you want to spend and what you want in return.
