So, you know how the story goes... you're casually having a conversation in chat and the topic is "what is the oldest smoke you have had". I make the comment that mine was from the early 90's to which Joe(Hardcore) says to me, "you've never had a Clear Havana?". Now I know how this can turn out so I figure I'll just ignore him and it won't be an issue. A few minutes later Joe repeats, "Hey Craig, you've never had a Clear Havana?". So rather than be rude I say that I haven't, and right on top of it is Joe telling me he is sending me one. A couple days later this arrives...

Prelight - The stick is wrapped in cello with the band on the outside of the cello, I would say this little guy is about 4" by 38ish. I take the stick out of the extremely yellow cello and notice that it has a few rough viens and a good amount of plume to it. Small crack at the foot, but considering this stick is older than I am it is in pretty good shape. I can't remember what year this is from but I believe Joe said from the 1940's. Prelight draw gives a grassy flavour with a hint of cinnamon to it. Time to fire this oldie up!

First third - Slow roasted this one to get it going and it is a mild cigar that is producing a good amount of smoke. Picking up hints of grass, hay as well as a sweet tobacco flavour. Burn is decent and did require a touch up due to a slight bit of tunneling. Ash held for about an inch before falling off.

Second third - As I get in to the second third the cigar has developed a bit. The grassy/hay flavour has picked up and there is a slight tingle on the tongue from a woodsy flavour. Retrohale was pretty boring during the first third with a bit of a peppery burn to it in the second third. Also picking up a leathery taste too.

Final Third - The leathery taste is starting to dominate with only a faint woodsy taste. The pepper is very bckground to the stick at this point. Burn has been solid since I had to touch up during the first third. The ash was pretty dark and held for close to an inch each time before falling off.

I have to say I was a bit supprised by this little fella. I thought it would be pretty one dimensional and very mild. It seemed to start out that way for the most part but did develope as it went along. Thanks again to Joe for giving me the opportunity to smoke something from the days when my parents were born!

Insightful review! I've often wondered what it would be like to smoke one of these older cigars, now I finally have something to go off of, thanks!

Very nice Joe!
Thanks Criag for the Review too!
I've never had a vintage stick or anything older than maybe three years. It's always interesting to see peoples take on an old cigar! Sometimes you just don't know if some sticks age well or age terribly.
