View Full Version : Have room around here for someone who takes forever to blend a cigar?

Have room for a cigar loving rodent who takes so damn long to blend a cigar that he ends up getting left behind in the blending room?

I just got back from an absolutely incredible trip down to Drew Estates in Nicaragua. What we did on that trip was incredible, but what really pushed it over the top was the BOTLs here that I shared it with. The Skipper, Tim, Jerome, Scott, Dimitri and James. It was you guys and your passion for cigars that made this trip something more than I ever could have dreamed.

Some stuff on me... Started smoking cigars in 1992 with an Onyx (pre-General cigar) at regimental Thanksgiving dinner, and it kind of went something like this: imagine a bunch of engineers going to a cigarette shop that sold cigars, and with no guidance or clue, trying to pick a cigar. We were so clueless we were sitting there doing cost evaluations on price versus size. I settled on an Onxy (I think it cost me about $4). Fast forward to after dinner, the smoking lamp is lit, no one has any idea what to do with these cigars. Someone spots a person at another table licking down their cigar, so we all did that too. No one had a cutter, so here we are biting caps off and trying to light soggy cigars with paper matches. Someone produces a zippo - it's giving off a chimney of smoke like a worn out diesel engine, but it got the cigars lit. Then, most of us being cigarette smokers, all proceeded to attempt to inhale the cigars... Not a pretty sight.

It was the Cuban Cohiba Robusto that I was given at graduation in June of 93 that truly hooked me though.

Smoked cigars off and on, but it was really more cigarettes that I smoked back then, until sometime in '97 or '98 (I really don't remember the exact date or even the year) when I woke up one morning and just quit. Simply walked away from cigars and 2+ packs a day of Lucky Strikes.

Was handed an original release Don Diego Playboy back in 2004 or 2005 and I fell in love with cigars all over again. Been downhill, on my pocketbook anyway, ever since.

As for the idiotic moniker... was signing up on another forum and I happened to have a photo of the last vessel I was an engineer on and one of the generators, a Detriot 2-71 2-stroke with a cracked exhaust and bad governor, so when that generator would run it was loud as all hell and it's RPMs would hunt. We had some sea scouts aboard and we got into a situation where we had to put that generator on line and with the bad governor, the lights were going up and down with it just screaming and howling all the while, and one of the Scouts made a comment about "Damn, those gerbils on the excersise wheel hooked up to the generator sure are thundering..."

Yeah, some days, I don't really understand my thought process myself either...

Nice to see you over here TG.....and agree with Tom, about time! Sounds like your trip to Nica pushed you over the edge, eh? ;).

Guys....This here Adam-Gerbil-fella, is perhaps one of the most knowledgeable folks I've (n)ever met about all things cigars. If Min Ron Nee were an American, wore cargo shorts, and drove a Volvo.....well, let's just say he and TG would have a few things in common...LOL.

A welcomed addtion to BOTL indeed, so again, nice to see ya bro!

Thanks everyone for the welcome. Once I get back home (in SoCal right now) I'll be able to contribute a bit more to the board, my online time is limited here and this 7" screen I'm working with is murder...

Thanks for having me along guys and aside from me being bad with names, it was great to be able to hang out with another group of BOTLS who are all about cigars and friendships.

As for the two bundles, heh, it worked right? :)

Nah, seriously, I kept going back and forth on the filler blend and I think Jon saw that and handed me another sheet and said to just write them both up.

PS: Scott - I can't respond to your PM yet because I don't have enough posts. Please shoot me an email me at my handle at gmail and I'll get that info to you.

LOL.

Thanks Kyle, but I am not even close to being in that league for CC or NC - humidor contents nor historical knowledge...

I think the only thing MRN and I might have in common is that we are both a few clicks off center.
