I was thinking of doing the same thing (switching from cingular to verizon). I've had my phone for a while now, Motorola V220.

I've heard some pretty good things about those phones but don't have anymore specifics.

Verizon is the best hands down. I hardly EVER get dropped and static vertually non exsistant. Consumer Reports says tops in all markets tested also. I get cells in my basement, Vegas hotels rooms, out in the AZ desert, anywhere in Florida and California when I travel. Go for it. I use one of there basic phones by Samsungs.

go to ebay and buy an unl, ocked phone. I say this, because they have the NEW Motorola SLVR.

JW, my two sons both have the Razr and love them! I must say that it's the best sounding cell phone I've heard when talking to them. You have a lot of cool features too with the USB computer hook-up. You've got a killer combo with the Razr and Verizon. Go for it!!!

I like the razr. fragile but i like it, I am on my second one in 8 months, which really is not that bad i guess... It is so light that you can forget where you put it which can lead to damage

I have the RazrV3c with Cingular and it sucks. I love Motorola's but I would get get the e815 instead.

The talk time on the V3c is rated at 180 min but it's more like 120min, at least that's all I ever could get out of my new V3c. And then their stinking apps drain the battery power evenmore whcih means your charging your battery practically every night. The screen when lit/activated makes this weird humming noise in the earpiece. Luckily it goes away when the screen goes dark. You pay a price for the slimness I guess.

The last annoying thing that Verizon did was move to a standard user interface on all their phones which did away with some of the neater Motorola features. Check out the e815, you may very well like it.

Hmmmm....$199 after rebates (Treo) or Free after rebates (Razr)...tough choice.

Gotta stay on the cheap on this one. lol.

I have verizon but some samsung phone.
Verizon has the best network, but I have been kinda dissapointed with their phone selection. Since they don't use SIM cards like everyone else you can't just buy any unlocked phone and slip your card in. You have to find a Verizon network capable phone and have Verizon activate it (which if its not a standard phone they are quite often clueless about)

I have the E815 and my dad has the Razr, every time were out he uses my phone. I would buy a razr if the price came down. To only advantge over the two phones is the size.

As for service I love my Verizon service. I use it in the CT, MA, NY, NH, RI, NJ and VT area with no problems. All our regional managers have them all over the US and there are only a few dropped calls with them

A site I like to read and get phone and provide info is howard forums (http://www.howardforums.com/)

I've heard generally bad things about the Razr. My friend owns one...most of the small flip phones actually take up way less room than this. It's slim but it's wide and tall. I keep my cell in my pocket...that Razr would be hard to do that with. Sweet looking, but he has had lots of problems with his. Of course, you never know what you're gonna get sometimes with electronics. That could just be his experience.

BigO. My major qualm with Cingular has been their network. That and our phones, but that can always be changed. However, I want stuff to work, so even if it was just the phones, too bad for cingular. I never had a problem with the Verizon Network except in an apartment I lived in for 6 months between houses. Must've been the one dead area Verizon has on the East Coast.

As to the getting it free, that's with rebates most places, and rebates you have to wait 150 to 180 days to use too. And as far as I know they are all geared toward new contracts. That's one thing I don't think the cell companies will ever realize. It's better to hang on to customers than to have to get new ones. They've always had it backwards.

I like the size of the razr. fits great in my back pocket, and sitting on it makes no difference to me or the phone.... Almost the size of a credit card, much smaller and I would really hurt the damn thing.....

OK, so if anyone else out there is thinking about going the route I did I want to warn you. I did a search online for "free verizon razr". Ended up with one of WireFly's parter companies. Figured I could deal with a little delay since I'd be getting both mine and my wife's phones for free. I knew I'd be in for some delay but opted for overnight shipping and figured I was good.

Well, they certainly ported our numbers over quickly. I placed the order Two Sundays ago and the number was ported last Wed. Just in time for me not to have a phone while picking up the Moms from the airport. Oops. Oh well, just another inconvenience, I'm saving all kinds of money...is what I was thinking. Well, tomorrow's a week from them porting my number and guess what? Still no phones. I actually had to call Verizon myself today after getting the number and Order ID from these guys because they told me Verizon was the hold up. Nope. Try again, says Verizon. So we called again and they told us "24 hours". Same thing they told us 5 days ago. Oh yeah, and the customer service is somewhere in Taiwan or somewhere. Fun, huh? Just be aware folks, if you go this route, be prepared for the hassles.

Jwrussell

Dave,

I still like the phone. I'm finally getting my rebates for the damn thing too so that's always a plus (I bought mine from Wirefly.com, rebates equalled the cost of the phone, but I was signing up with a new provider).

The issues:
Reception isn't necessarily as good as a phone with an external antenna, but in all but the worst areas (around my home unfortunately, where even my wife's Treo has trouble) it gets a signal just fine. When not making a phone call if you open the phone and hold it to your ear there is a buzzing sound. It's annoying as hell when you first notice it, but once you know it's there...so what. I don't open the phone and hold it to my ear unless I'm making a call so... I've read quite a bit about them being fragile. Mine seems to be holding up just fine and I've dropped it a couple of times, but if you are a clutz or want a rugged phone, probably not the one for you. Battery power, SUCKS. Keep a charger with you. I'm not on my phone a ton each day so it doesn't really affect me. If you use your phone constantly though, consider a phone with better battery life.

Also, Motorola just came out with the next gen of this phone: The Krazer (krzr).
PC Magazine Review (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2022561,00.asp)

It's a bit longer, bit beefier looking than the Rzr. It comes with a built in MP3 player which the Rzr doesn't have. Personally I don't like it as much as the Rzr.

Also, I think there's a new version of the Rzr, the V3M vs V3C which I have.

Let us know what you get.

If you have verizon as a carrier, the Samsung A930 is a fantastic phone. Great speakerphone, awesome battery life, nice weight/feel to it.

My Dad has the Razr, he doesn't use it all that often but I had to set it up for him. I just don't like it for some reason, the key pad isn't so hot and it's just too thin for me. I need some substance to my phones.

After much debate and a phone call to a Brother here, I took the razr plunge. Received the black one in the mail today.

My first concern was what I read about not being able to hear so I bumped it up to the highest setting (7) and made a call. Had to turn it down a notch or two after about 15 seconds of conversing. Not sure if the issue has been resolved or what but I had no problem hearing...and that was using it in my truck going down the interstate.

I do notice that reception while talking seems slightly less than my Moto 551. As Jason said, I attribute that to the lack of an external antenna. I am having no problem maintaining 4-5 bars so far.

I was concerned about scratching it up so I did purchase the case for it that you can clip to your belt if you want. I am surprised at how slim the phone still is even with the case on. A little bit of sexiness of the phone is lost with the case but so be it.

Obviously, it is way to early to say if I'm pleased or not...only time will tell.

The samsungs have always been good. Although my last two motorolas have been great.

I agree, the Samsungs are great. I have the Samsung d807 slider. I'm very happy with it so far.

I'm with Cingular again for another 2 years, though. Thought about switching to Verizon but their coverage out here stinks.

Besides, with the new phone all the connection issues I was having, and blaming on Cingular, have been solved. The phone makes a huge difference.

I currently have a Samsung A930 and love it. So many features compared to the old phones, reception is great and the talk time is great. My only complaint is the low battery warning. It happens way too close to the phone actually dying. It's not really a warning but a notfication ten minutes before it happens.

I use Verizon now but was with Cingular for years prior. Coverage in Jersey isn't an issue, it's pretty much everywhere. I switched due to the "in network." Almost all my friends have verizon so I don't use any minutes and have unlimited text messaging, pic texting and video texting.

The wife has the BlackBerry 7130c (http://www.discoverblackberry.com/devices/device-detail.jsp?navId=H0,C141,P166)...it's a little more sleek then mine.

Oh well, they are both paid for by work. :innocent:

Mine's still ticking along just fine. My major beef is battery life, which sucks. Beyond that, it does the job. Just do yourself a favor and have a charger in all the major areas you go to (home, car, office).

My friend was unsure about getting one and I told him just buy a damn phone already and stop contemplating which one would be the right fit. He seems pretty pleased with it now, and he likes the pseudo GPS feature they have. It works pretty well, you can put in a destination and it will tell you where to turn etc, and you can use your bluetooth headset to hear the directions directly in your ear if you are traveling with people.
