David's AK target. The hostage bit the dust since I was making some sight adjustments and needed another "face" to shoot at.
Brian did tell me to mention that I was stationed against a tree. I think he is just pissed that his target isn't as good.

It was a great day for shooting. Yep, the slugs make nice holes but damn they kick like a mule. Actually, the 3" Magnum 0000 Buck kicked worse. That's what made all the other holes in the slug target.
David forgot to tell you about Bump firing the AK's. Freakin' awesome!

Ah, bump firing!
You hold the AK at your hip, stick your finger through the trigger guard and plant the tip of your finger against your hip, and pull the gun forward by the forearm. The gun fires from the forward pressure, then recoils back, and if you keep the forward pressure on, it will fire again...and again...and again.
When mastered, a bystander would swear you were firing a full auto. Brian and I successfully pulled off 8-10 round bursts in about 2 seconds.

Damn David. I'm incredibly jealous. Looks like a nice piece of land. Haven't been shooting for ever. Really need to change that.
Nice stuff David  I used to go to my ex-g/f's place and shoot guns. I tore up this rotten tree with the shotgun. Fun times...

Yea, I've had the lease for 3 years. Just me, my father-in-law, and my buddy Greg lease it. 3 miles from my house.
100 acres...40 acres is field, 30 acres is cedars, and 30 acres is wooded.
Their share is higher priced cuz they have some cattle on it. I pay $150 a year for hunting rights. Not to shabby.

Wow, that seems very cheap to have access to land like that. Then again I don't know anything about leasing land...
Damn that's a VERY good deal David
David
03-05-2006, 10:38 PM
The total is $900 (which is still cheap) but they pay more since both of them have a total of about 15 head of cattle on it.

Todd's right, as much as the Turnpike looks like a industrial park there are some very gorgeous parts of NJ. Mostly Northwest NJ and the sourthern portion.

But then again, that's how it is portrayed.

Grew up right across the river from Philly near Cherry Hill. Parts of Jersey are beautiful. Not that I'd ever move back. :)

not to be jerk but where is the eye protection?
The reason I ask is because I saw the action cover on an ak come off and smack my buddy in the forehead. Which I think is why most terrorists wear a towell on their head.:riflefire

That might work. But what happens if you get hit by something and the glass eyes shatter and really causes problems.

You bring up a good point turtle. I usually do wear eye protection but for some reason the last two times David and I have shot I haven't.
You may notice an apparent lack of hearing protection in a couple of the photo's as well. Instead of my muffs I was trying out some plugs with an impact valve. They worked well. You can hear normal conversation when there's no shooting going on but as soon as a shot is fired the valve senses it and closes. Pretty cool.
turtle
03-07-2006, 08:00 PM
Yes I did see muffs on one fella but not on the others. I figured the rest of you were wearing plugs. Shooting an ak with no ear protection would pretty much make you deaf pretty quickly. Especially bump firing. I have a pair of Leightning 31 muffs that I like really well. I think that ear plugs are generally uncomfortable.

Dear turtle,
You are correct that eye protection should be worn at all times. They were in my range bag but I neglected to pull the glasses out. Excellent reminder that safety comes first!

That is good. My advice is to seek out quality instruction to start with. Find a qualified instructor near you, and learn the correct way to start. You will be better and safer.

Yea... i feel I kinda need to learn after my week.... But i will be going to class, actually through the same training as the cops I believe....Not to ignite a firey debate but I think you would be dead or seriously injured right now if you had been carrying and tried to pull your gun out...and if you would have opened fire when they ran off you would be in trouble with the law. Just my $.02

For once Todd and I agree on a gun issue! LMAO.
Clay, I'm all for CCW. Definately go get one and get trained, as much as you can handle. But Todd's right, carrying would not have helped you in the situation you described as you described it. Better situational awareness might have helped to make a concealed weapon useful in that situation, but the way it happened, you would have done yourself more harm than good going for a gun. Anyone training you will tell you the same thing. If you find yourself in the situation you were in, give them everything they ask for. If at some point it looks like they are going to shoot anyway, then go for it, you have nothing to lose, but it's a huge last resort (in that situation). And like Todd said, shooting at someone running away is a HUGE no-no.
Again, I am definately a proponent of CCW. It's just one of those things. A concealed wepaon doesn't always change what can happen in a situation. Also, as far as training goes, see if you can find a local IDP (International Defensive Pistol) group. It's fun and it can be excellent practice in drawing and firing from concealment and such.
Black Dog
03-09-2006, 05:09 PM
I agree that there are situations where having a concealed weapon may not be of help but I will say that carrying has greatly improved my situational awareness.
Money or a car aren't worth risking your life or taking someone elses.
