Searching the web, I found many variations of this recipe. From using simple sugar (water + sugar heated up and then mix it) to just using sugar, to using powered sugar, etc. What's a good recipe guys?

http://drinksmixer.com/drink582.html try this one and let us know how it works out. I also dig the cuba libre which is coke, rum and lime juice.

:yes::yes::yes:

How ever Azucar mixes them up. I can only take 1 or 2 of them, otherwise they get too sweet.

Lotsa fresh lime juice (not that Rose's crap).
Simple syrup.
Good white rum.
Muddled (not crushed) mint (I like julep mint).
Club soda
The proportions are up to you, I mix it until it tastes good.

The azucar ones were very good but like Larry said, one or two and that is it for me.

I'd like to try making these at home. Fresh mint is a must along with fresh lime juice.

tobby4 special

Yep... lime squeezed, so that you get the pulp.... 6-7 small mint leaves, mash... then add a little rum and add the pure cane sugar( you know the bigger grains in the brown packets)... this takes care of the sweet and sour mix... add more rum, shake.... and top off with a splash or two of bitters.... Damn good.... add cocunut if you like to add a different flavor, there are a ton of things you can do with these but the more "real" stuff you put in the better....

Spent alot of time researching this. ght - fresh lime juice and fresh mint ONLY. If no simple syrup - sugar is ok.

Muddled is correct.

And don't laugh - some more full bodied rums work as well like zaccapa

Pegu Lounge on Houston makes an interesting variation called the Old Cuban... champagne instead of club soda.

Absolutely some dark rums are great in a mojito (HC7, Zacapa, even a little Pyrat).
I usually just save that for sippin'.

Well I can tell you that the ones at Floridita SUCK!!! ( Hemingways favorite hangout) I have been told I make one of the best Mojitos
Ok In a shaker
Add ice
2 tsp sugar (Simple syrup if you have it)
Fresh mint sprigs (It is the stems that have all the mint flavor) don't skimp
Fresh lime juice and a few wedges in limes
1 ½ oz to 2 oz of Havana club Blanco rum (I know it is hard to find but it tastes the best) if not Light higher end rum like Cane
Then shack the shit out of it:headroll:
In a glass fill with ice pour it in thru Shaker top
Top with club soda and a fresh mint sprig

At a bar, mojitos (if they even have mint)=$$$ since they're so trendy.
I usually order caipirihnas or cuba libres, since they're easy to make and don't require weird ingredients, well not too weird.
At home, they're all great on a sunny day staring at the City skyline.

And bartenders HATE to make them - too much effort for most.

Depending on which bar I go to, the extent of their mixing skills is adding to rum to coke. Anything that requires a shaker and I get the eye-roll.
I usually stick to beer or simple drinks at these places

On the other hand there are a couple of bartenders in the area that actually enjoy their job, and I reward them for it.

Simple syrup is easy to make. Just put some water in a pan and boil it, throw in sugar. 1:1 water/sugar ratio for thick syrup 2:1 for medium 3:1 for thin. For this recipe you would want the thinner stuff.

I had my first mojito a little over a week back at a restaurant called Mojito's in Louisville, Kentucky. Man, it was DELICIOUS! I was the only one at our table to get one, and I got it based on the recommendations of you fine brothers. After everyone tasted mine, we ended up with a couple pitchers full of 'em!

I watched them closely at azucar last time I went. They put cut up limes and the mint into the glass, then poured plain ol sugar on top. Then you take a wooden muddler and do that downwards twisting motion till its all nice and mashed. Then the bartender added the ice, poured in plenty of rum and topped it with the club soda.

I think there is a little stirring after the rum is added, but everything is made right in the glass, no shakers.

I had my first and only (so far) Mojitos in a Cuban restaurant on Grand Cayman, they were good, but not enough rum.

As for the cuba libre, i stumbled on that by accident the first time i mixed a rum and diet coke w/lime. it is now my preferred mixer.

Made up some mojitos this weekend. Unfortunately, the mint I was able to get to was on the crappy side. Not as fresh as I would have liked.

Here's my recipe. In a pint glass, 2 1/4s of a lime; 6 tsps of simple syrup, a good size of mint. Muddle. Add a good amount of ice.

Add hoever much rum (I used 10 Cane) you want, I did 2-3 shots. Top with club soda, stirl up.

I love Mojitos but finding good ones is difficult. The best I have found so far is at Cafe Ba Ba Reeba in Las Vegas!!! In the front of the Fashion Show Mall. Tried making my own, but haven't gotten it down.
Not that fond of the ones at Casa Fuente.

Not that fond of the ones at Casa Fuente.
Me neither. I found them bland and flavorless.

Like a good Bloody Mary, if you found a bar that does them right, stick with 'em.
Of course, just like a Bloody Mary, the ones I make at home are way better than any bar's.

They are good if made the right way,....

if making for yourself then it will take practice to make it the way you want.. some people like sweet, some like more lime.. I for one would not be able to drink the ones that Tom likes because there would be too much sugar..

It is a science..

More rum, followed by the lime bite, and just enough mint to taste it but not overpower it  And sugar is somewhere in there

Guys,
Unless you are making drinks for your wife's Bunko party, you shouldn't be worried about it. If you are making drinks for the ladies, a store bought mix will work. Now if you'ld like a good drink let's talk about some 18 year Macalllan with 2 rocks and a nice smoke. Just messin about the mojitos, they are way to sweet for me.
