Occasionally I see references to varnished and unvarnished cigars. What does this mean, and which is preferable?

Thanks,

Mike

Shawn,

I read it again today, a guy was smoking an unvarnished cigar? PM me and I'll give you some other examples.

It refers to the box.

One is varnished and the other isn't. The varnished box is generally preferred for ageing as the varnish seals the pores in the wood thus reducing the amount of oxygen exchanging inside the box.

As to which is preferred as far as tatse goes, that is entirely up to each individual. For the most part the two cigars are different vitolas as in the case of the Partagas 898 and 898v.

I hate varnished cigars. They are so hard to cut and when lit they burn like a torch ...

I knew a FOG would have the answer. Mike I had wondered the same thing but it was a question I never asked. Thanks Wasch thats very good info.

I was just looking through a supplier and noticed that they offered a brand of cigars in a varnished box, or twice as many in a cab. The light came on. Guess I'll have to check my reading comprehension on what I think I saw this earlier today.

Wasch, you must have had a hard 28 years to be so young and still be a FOG!

Even at age 53 my memory is such that I can remember this question going around last month. Good info on varnished versus regular packaging.

ohpus, your considered old when you start sniffing after scratching. I'll be 39 on Fathers Day. I am getting older, but no way even close to being a FOG or sniff after scratching. I am just a Newbie here to learn what I can. Glad I stopped looking for the shellacked stick the other day because of this thread :sadstare: .

Far as varnished, some sticks are made from very high quality tobacco that if stored properly in a varnished box has a better ability to age for many years (like decades) if left undisturbed. The flavors are better kept inside and develop and change to more a mellow taste and aroma as well as lose the bitter/tanic or harshness often found in fresher sticks. The varnish limits the O2 and RH moisture exchange more than most other types of storage thereby slowing down the maturation process giving the cigar a better change to develop even more. Similar to storing them sealed tight in A/T (aluminum tubes) or wrapped in foil. Do they get better is always going to be a question to personal taste. That is why they make chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Many sticks are very good early on and simply go flat when they get older. You can bet those in varnished boxes are meant to be there a long, long time. Now excuse me whilst I scratch my ass.
