New "toy" arrived today. :stretchgr

It's not complete though...this was just the main component...waiting on other components.:assaultri I hate waiting. :sadpace:

I'm waiting to hear on the other "major" component to this new toy and hope to have it in a week or two max. Again, I hate waiting. :crytears:

I figure probably about a month before I can go :riflefire and :rifleaim:.

Jason,

Where do you plan to make bangy-bangy? I used to take my Glock to Shooting Sports on Dale Mabry. If my feeble memory serves me correctly it was only about $10 for as long as you could stand there and fire.

Have fun. Guess I missed what brand of toy you bought?

Nope Mike, you didn't miss it. I haven't said what I got. I'm teasing.

A deal I thought I had for a major component of what I'm putting together fell through so I'm in the process of trying to find another deal. I'll post pics just as soon as I am able to get everything together.

Oh, and I haven't shot at Shooting Sports in forever, but probably will soon as it's so close. My range of choice lately had been Knights Shooting Sports on 19.

Thanks Cliff. I'll try and get some better pics here in the next few days. I'm not really happy with that pic anyway.

Mike, up north a bit is the Hernando Sportsman's club. It's right about an hour drive unfortunately, but they have a 100 and 200 meter range so that will allow me to get out to distance. About an hour and a half south is the Manatee range and they actually go out to 1000 yards with ranges between that and 100 so that will allow me to really test myself once I've gotten good at the lesser distances.

Very nice rifle, Jason. What length barrel? Mine is 26". Do you reload? If so, the 175's are the cat's meow. With a good load they will stay supersonic to almost 1,200 yards.

Thanks all. Fox, It's the 20" barrel actually. It fades out towards the end of the barrel so it's hard to see in the pic. Yes and no to the reload quesiton. I have a Lee setup for my .40 but haven't used it in ages. I can pull that out and get some dies and such for the .308, we'll see. For now, I'm going to see how it does on store bought Match ammo. I just never have shot enough for reloading to really make sense. We'll see.

For now, I've got the following to feed through it:
Black Hills 168 and 175
Lake City M855 175
And I'm waiting to hear about a possible deal on a case of Federal Gold Medal Match in 168. Finding Federal GMM for a decent price is ridiculous, especially the 175.

Fox, what rifle?

That is absolutely bad ass. That same rifle is on my VERY short list.

Jwrussell
07-17-2006, 09:24 AM
OK, so here's my pitiful ass first attempt at precision shooting with a scoped rifle.

I went out on Sunday to one of the local 100 yard ranges. Arrived at about 10:30 am to sight-in and break-in the new barrel (for the unitiated that means shooting a round, cleaning; shooting 3 rounds cleaning; etc.; etc.; ad nauseum). I fired a total of 30 rounds. Between all the cleaning and shooting, I was there until 3pm! So, hopefully my later shooting can be excused for being tired...we'll see the next tiem I go out.

Here's the first target at 50 yards, see below it for the description of rounds:

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/7893/50yardmv5.jpg

Round 1: directly left of the target. No idea how it got there as you'll see from the next rounds. Clean.
Rounds 2-4: Bottom Left group. Not too bad. Clean. 4 inches down, 3 inches left.
Round 5: My mathmatically challenged ass screws up the number of clicks I need, and instead of turning twice what I would need at 100 yards as I was at 50 yards, I turned half. Up one inch and Left one and a half inches from the previous group.
Rounds 6-9(round counts are a little sketchy here, I forgot my notebook and seem to have lost the scrap I was keeping track on): Part of that ragged hole in the left center of the target. :halfgrinw Oh...Clean.
Rounds 10-12: Part of that Ragged Hole left center of the target.:glassesgr
Rounds 13-15: At this point I figure I'm pretty spot on so I attempt to move myself directly center target. The result is the three shot group in the center of the target. This was the start of my shooting going downhill. Clean.
Rounds 16-20: My first foray at 100 Yards. The 4 shots below and to the right of center and that one lone shot far left, but inside the black. Bah.:frownno:
Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnd Clean.

So now we move to my last 10 shot group at 100 Yards before I cleaned the gun for good and packed up for home. If you look closely at the buttstock of the rifle you will notice a folded apparatus at the bottom of it. This is the Accushot Monopod. It's a nifty little device that allows you to have a rear rest without a bean bag or what not. It's also adjustable so you can lock into the rifle and with your support hand adjust for elevation. It works well, but I need practice with it. I'm pretty sure I was not using it to it's full advantage as I believe the second knurled ring is used for locking in your adjustment and I wasn't doing that. So every time I fired the rifle I was losing my previous adjustment and having to resight. That, the heat and simply me caused this wonderful 100 yard target. Hopefully I can do better my next time out. :tongueout

http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/1882/100yardcm1.jpg

At least two of those center shots were my last shots on target. For whatever reason I seemed to be walking my rounds in closer to the target. I was having a hell of a time staying on target and keeping the rifle steady at this point. I'd like to think that those three shots in the center where my last few shots, but I really don't know. I shot all ten before going out and checking my target and I couldn't see the holes that well through my scope at 100.

All in all it was a good trip. I got the tedious chore of breaking in the barrel done (well, maybe a couple more 10 shot, clean strings, we'll see) and I finally got to get behind the new rifle. Hopefully things will improve with time and practice. now to find lots more ammo.

With some hardware like that you may want a good pair of binoculars or some sort of spotting monocular to check your groupings.

I would think after all of that out in the heat you did pretty good on the last group...or whichever was in the center.

The biggest thing I learned in the Army while sighting your weapon in the blazing heat, wearing fatigues (nice name huh) and all my gear was to take your time and drink tons of water.

Those silhouettes they use start looking really small at 100 yards and even smaller at 250 and 500 through iron sights! :squinteye

Yeah, I remember Todd. I shot qualification while in ROTC.

Yeah, I forgot a ton of stuff I meant to bring including a notebook to keep track of shots and my binoculars...though they are only 10x50 so I don't know if they would have been any better as my scope is 10x42.

Jason, mine is a PSS w/USO Titanium Tactical rings and a USO SN-6 @ 10x. I use the same bipod. 168's will do fine out to about 800 yards. They will yaw well before 1,000, coming from a 20" barrel. If you find an accurate 175 grain load, stick with it as it will handle all distances you will ever need. 175's buck the wind much better.

Few people reload for cost effectiveness any more; they reload for precision. You can dramatically reduce your group size by tuning your loads for your rifle. I never had much luck with the Lake City stuff, although I do use LC brass. M855 is 62 grain steel penetrator for the M16. I am assuming you meant M118LR?

It is an incredible scope. The optics are nothing short of unbelievable. Many times I have shot next to Leupold's when they were using 14x magnification. The 10x USO will outresolve a Leupold at 14x, with the Leupold at 200 yards and the USO at 300 yards! I have made quite a few converts from Leupold to USO. I have made a lot of sales for the Williams family!

That is a damn nice rifle. FN is top knotch. My next is an Accuracy International AWS. I have a shitload of Kahles scopes just waiting to be mated with a nice rifle. I shot expert for the Army myself. If I can see it, I can hit it with a rifle. With a pistol, well, that's another story.... ;)

07-19-2006, 08:20 AM
LOL, nice. That's a nice rifle MR, be sure to post up some pictures. If I could make a suggestion though? Have you looked into either G.A. Precision or Tactical Operations? Both places do completely custom rifles and considering the pricing on those dang AIs...I mean, day-um. I don't know about Tac-Ops, but I do know that G.A. uses the AI stocks on some of their rifles if that's a consideration (see their "Rock"). And Tac-Ops even offers a .25 MOA @ 100 yards guarantee.

Jwrussell
09-05-2006, 12:05 PM
OK, so I've been out a couple of times since my first range report and figured it was time for another (especially since I could actually see improvement this time ). I went out this Sunday and arrived at the range around 10:30. It was PACKED full. Fortunately, quite a few of the folks at 100 yards had been there all morning so I only waited one "range revolution" to get a lane. I spent about 3 hours there and sent somewhere around 80 rounds down range. My first 4 rounds were by far the best. Unfortunately I was never able to match that first grouping. I also took some time to blast at some of the bowling pins set up on the berm. Hitting the fat bottom part was no challenge, but getting consistent hits on the top was a bit more difficult. At any rate, here's some pics:

My very first 4 shots. The lone shot high and right was my CCBS (Clean Cold Bore Shot). The three shot group below measured under a half inch center to center.

http://img357.imageshack.us/img357/5913/firstgroupqz4.jpg

My third grouping, sorry, I forgot to bring the target with measurements but definately sub MOA on this one.
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/4550/20060904rifle0049sn6.jpg

And another sub MOA group(barely) (My 7th I think):
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/7320/20060904rifle0050wc2.jpg

And the entire target. I shot more than is shown here but this was my first 28 shots. All were Federal Gold Medal Match 168 grain.
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/390/20060904rifle0051lo7.jpg

I also set up a target along the same lines as above later without the center dot and tried one round per square with Lake City M118LR 175 grain. I averaged ~.5 POA-POI (Point of Aim to Point of Impact) on that drill. So right around 1 moa I guess.

Certainly an improvement from my first outing. I still need to take her in for a trigger job to get it down to around 2.5 or so and get the extractor worked on. Might try to do that towards the end of the month as my weekends are going to be spent at Obedience trials next month.

Eh, not since last month Tom. I went out to a 565 yard shoot where they set up a string of clay pigeons glued to cardboard. Everyone lines up and you go down the line one by one. You get one shot. If you miss, it goes to the next guy, if you hit, you keep shooting until you miss. We went down the line 7 times. I had 7 empty shells. LOL.

Been too busy lately to get out, hope to soon.

Jwrussell
03-23-2008, 01:15 PM
Wow, been a while since I last posted on here. Went out yesterday morning with a friend from work and worked out the PBR at the 100 yard line again. Below is a picture of shots 4, 5 and 6. The first three weren't bad, but I pulled one badly. I actually cut this out of the target with my knife when I walked up to check it. It was just so pretty I figured it deserved preserving. :eyebrow:

The group measures .731 edge to edge (which you can see in the second picture. That means center to center the group was (.731 -.308 (diameter of the round)) = .423! Well under a half an inch at 100 yards. I can't do much better than that! Unfortunatley I never repeated the group, but overall it was a great day. I kept all of my groups fairly tight and also destroyed 4 clays that I threw out on the berm with 4 shots. Not much of a challenge considering their diameter, but fun none-the-less. I meant to pick up some marshmallow peeps for targets to celelbrate Easter, but didn't get around to it. :headroll:

Why don't you get them targets that are bright yellow underneath. Helps seeing where you shot.

At first when I was reading this thread I thought you were gonna say you got somethin like an AR15.

Next time I am in Tampa you gotta meet up with my uncle and me and go shooting. I have only gone to shoot pistols with him, but he has a gun safe thats as tall as me filled with guns.

Jwrussell
03-23-2008, 02:28 PM
Josh, I actually have some of those targets. I do use them, but at times I want something smaller to aim at. The group you see was about 3 inches to the right and 1 inch high from where I was aiming at. When I went to that long range shoot my zero got messed up and I was working to correct that yesterday. If I had my zero correct you would have seen that group in an orange circle that I was using as a target.

Oh, and I already have an AR15.

Sounds great! As always, let me know when you are in town.

Very nice but how do you get your finger in that little teeny tiny trigger guard

Mitch
06-01-2008, 07:13 PM
sounds like some nice shooting. Are you reloading or using factory?

A favoite target of mine is to take masking tape and run about ten pennies down it an inch or so apart, then double back on the tape to capture them all. If you hang it, thay stay fairly steady and you can shoot from the bottom up. The pennies just disapear on impact, but I've found a few in the berm with holes in them. Kinda neet.

You shooting off a rest, sandbags, bipod?

Anyway, sounds like fun, Sh*t hits the fan I'd like to be on your team.

Jwrussell
06-01-2008, 09:48 PM
Thanks Mitch. That's factory ammo. Federal Gold Medal, 168. I really like the Penny idea, I'm going to have to try that next time out. Shooting off of a bench using a bipod and a squeeze bag under the stock. One of these times I'll move the damn bench over so I can shoot prone. I always mean to, but never seem to get around to it.

Pcozad1...Huh?
