Anyone have one? I've always wanted one to know what's going on in town.

I just go to the firehouse and ride when I feel like it. There are a lot of squirrels there listening to everything they call. Were just looking for nuts like everyone else.

We used to have a couple scanner that we listened to the race teams with at the races. Then I found out the local police / fire channels and would listen in on those too. Used to hear all kinds of interest things. Then they came up with private channels that were hard to get, so it took some of the fun out of it.

I like my Bearcat BC780XLT... holds plenty of channels and can be programmed via a PC with special software that reads the frequencies from an excel spreadsheet.

If you need digital then I would recommend the Pro-96 from radioshack. The only thing digital around here is the state police and DNR so I didnt bother coughing up the extra money when I bought mine.

My dad used to have one and we'd listen to cell phone and police/fire/etc. conversations. Needless to say we heard some wierd stuff.

So digitial is the way to go in NJ. My PD department is pretty high tech, I bet they're on digital.

Looks like NJ is on a digital trunked system so you will want the digital radio. http://radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&stid=34 has some information, as well as http://cityfreq.com/nj/

Luckily we were able to keep the digital out of our local system. In MI the state police and DNR use it and I know when it was put in they were trying to get local districts to switch, which probably happened in some areas. The implementation was full of issues and it still doesn't work right. The digital radio works like a Nextel walkie talkie and I laugh when I see someone from state repeatedly keying up their radio to get through.
