View Full Version : Do you use a cigar poker?

cvm4 started a thread on this on the other bb and it got me thinking. Before reading that thread whenever I had 'gar with a tight draw I either dealt with it or tossed it. Since then I've had two plugged cigars with a draw so tight you could barely get any smoke out of it. The first one happened to be while I was in my gargae a couple of nights ago. A Stanley scratch awl from my workbench fixed the problem. The second was away from home and I got so frustrated I just threw it away.
The only ones I see advertised are the high end ones.
Do you folks ever find need for a poker and if so what do you use?

I haven't had to use one yet (of course now that I say this i'm screwed I'm sure), however I do have plans to order one from that place N2 got his. I just haven't decided what band to get on it...hehehe. 8)
I've heard you can use a wooden skewer if you're stuck and really need something laying around the house...but again, haven't had to try that first hand as of yet.

Jerry (jck) has the Petroglyph designs poker. Very cool. I use a 1/16" stainless welding rod with a wine cork on the end.
Ditto. Wellm minus the cork. I formed a handle on mine, so it looks like a " T " .
It works well.

I generally dont mess with cigar's that are smoking poor... I refuse to spend my smoking time in a pissy mood, it's really not that big of deal to chuck one, I have more.
I will give it one last chance to come alive with a little prompting from a bamboo skewer. You can get a ton of these for a buck or two at the grocery store. If the skewer works, great. If not get a new one, great.
Either way, I'm enjoying a cigar 8)

Jerry - If you have some bands that you don't mind parting with (after you smoke some, of course), would you mind sending me a couple for when I order my poker? [-o<
Sweet....I have a band. Now what do I do???

I'm sure I'll run into this problem at some point, but as of yet I've never had to deal with it. :smt102

I will bet you Penguin can make pokers like that. With his skills making pens that would have to be easy. He would just need the bands from some smokes.

 We have discussed that. He can make everything but the base but he may have worked it out. He is SO busy trying to fill Xmas pen orders, he hasn't had time to even smoke!!! Plus, the little fury bastage has been gifting a ton of cigars  with his pens and is running very low
If you have purchased one of his pens, then you know that he doesn't charge nearly enough for them.
I've been wanting to get one of his pens. those are beautiful. Maybe for my birthday in march, when pengy slows down production a bit, and catches back up. :) that would be cool if he also could make the pokers!

Well, I've heard of it but I don't see myself getting one. I think I'm going to stay loyal to Habanos Torres. Never have a problem with one of Tim'ss cigars.

Mr. Penguin dude...I would love to see your work and would like to know if you ever make a poker.
Just caught this thread. This is the most frustrating past of cigar smoking to me. Found 12 inch long very small diameter drill bit at a local gun show. Not sure what they are used for but was a couple of bucks and worked great. Drill a little and a slight knock the dust falls out leaving a clear passage.

Sounds dangerous.
Less than you would think. You roll the bit in your hand and it bites giving you direction. Every time I tried a skewer, I ran it through the side. The pokers are great but I'm too cheap.

ahhhh...so you spin it by hand and it doesn't take much effort to turn it? How far do you drill in?
Would a better word for this be twist instead of drill? nm.
I confess, I tried it with a cordless drill and ruined one cigar. Yeah twist by hand. Depends on the size of the cigar. Couple of inches, then test etc. I was able to smoke a beautiful 98 H. Upmann Monarch. Had to go in half way. It never leaves the cigar the same and purists would not be happy but an Upmann is an Upmann.

Another option is to buy a box of paper clips from the store. The big kind. Open them up all the way and poke away. I've tried this to good results. Gets ya a clear cigar if it's not plugged more than a couple inches in. If it is, and you draw on your cigar pre-light, then just poke the other side too.

Use a bamboo kitchen skewer when needed. 100 for $5.00 and always works. Paul

I've come across a problem I am having with a box of RyJ Herm.#2's. They are all tight as can be with no way to fight through it. Since these are pretty expensive cigars I'd rather not trash them.
I've tried the skewer method, on another cigar and that seemed to work well until I noticed that I was cracking the wrapper. I think the diameter of the skewer is a little thick. I'm looking for a legit cigar poker that is priced right. I don't need the fancy cigar look-a-like poker. What else is available? As you could imagine it's a real tough web search when you type in "cigar poker"! Thanks.
All I know of is: http://www.petroglyphdesigns.com/Cigar%20Pokers.htm
I think the cheapest is $45 :dunno: It's a solid product though.

I am having an issue with an expensive double corona, so I saved it. I am looking at poker options as well. I think a bamboo skewer is the cheapest way to go as a start. I have tossed only a couple cigars from being plugged and tried too long and tossed a couple more. But would be nice to have a decent additional accessory. I heard of that site Cliff, pretty nice looking to go with the expensive price tag.
$45 isn't that expensive when you consider spending $30 on a cutter and $80 on a good torch lighter :dunno:

But how often will you use the poker?
How about a coat hanger straightened out?
I feel like there are a ton of other options that are much cheaper

I was just going to post that, great point Tom. I use either the Palio or Xikar cutters. I use a cheaper Xikar torch in the car or the more expensive S.T. Dupont Xtend at home or at HERF's. But I would rarely use a poker, so the cost per stick usage factor is way down. Now I have an expensive stick that is severely plugged that I want to salvage is making me do something. A coat hanger, a bamboo skewer, I don't know. But willing to try something. I think I will try first on a cheap MM or a dog rocket as a sacrifice to try first before shoving a coat hanger into the DC stick that I want to smoke.
I'm telling you, a long slender drill bit. You pick them up at Home depot. Gently twist the bit into the cigar, tapping occasionally to release the tobacco dust. Test the draw. If necessary twist a little farther. I found a poker just shoved the tobacco around where the bit removed a tiny amount and let them smoke. Works great and because you are rolling the bit in, you have control versus pushing a sharp instrument.

$45 for something I hope I never use compared to $100 lighter and $40 cutter I use everytime is not a fair comparison. I like the drillbit idea CW, I'll have to try it. Do you have a 1/16" or 3/32"?

I was cruising the web when I ran across this item. It may be a less expensive alternative poker. DrawPoker
Price: $19.99
Whatever the manufacturer, even with the best of cigars, one of the hazards of smoking hand rolled cigars is that occasionally you encounter one that is plugged and hard to draw, offering little option but to discard it as unsmokable. Now, however, there is a solution to this form of premium cigar roulette. Drawpoker is the answer to the plugged cigar. Simply inserting the Drawpoker down the length of the offending cigar opens it up, and the tight draw becomes a thing of the past. Now the cigar is freed of its obstruction and open to providing all the smoking pleasure for which it was intended. With just one or two uses of Drawpoker, you can save more than its cost and all the frustration of having to throw away your valuable cigars.
Cuts up to a 7 1/2 inch cigar.
Shipping Charge: $2.00
Quantity:
I found it at www.premiumhumidors.com under cutters, where it also shows a picture of the poker.
I hope this is useful.
