You can come up to Frederick and head to the local brew pub (cigar friendly!! Also, there is a small B&M across the street) Brewer's Alley (http://www.brewers-alley.com/) where pints are 1.50 after 8 PM, and a free cajun buffet with hot wings, gumbo and crawdads after 9 PM.

How bad would the traffic be? Bad I would think. I have never drove from Alexandria to Frederick on a week night.

About 1hr 20min on metro. You'll need to transfer from the Blue Line to the Red Line at Metro Center. Then it's another 30-50min to Frederick depending on traffic.
