    Default IPod Help

I posted this on another site and I thought that I'd share. So...

This may be old hash, but here are some great websites for the IPod. Also, don't use I-tunes. What a piece for shit. I use several different pieces of software to "get it done and get it right". I absolutely love mine (once I started to use it correctly and with the correct software). A lot of this software can be used on any MP3’s (the only format to encode your music – I personally prefer 128 kbps or above but never below). Let me know if you have any questions.

Just a personal preference thing. I personally have most of this software installed on at least one of my computers (including I-tunes). I only use I-tunes to play music on my home stereo computer. I think it sucks for anything but this task. I use one or more of the above software for all other IPod related stuff. Until someone develops a single piece of software that rips, normalizes, edits tags, and allows for two way communication with the Pod I'm stuck with using the best available tools for each task. Got to love Apple!!

I don't have an ipod but became a full-time mac user 2 years ago after getting a new powerbook. I used to use macs in the system 6 and 7 days, and used Linux as my main OS for years before switching to the mac platform.

The thing was, at first I hated how itunes managed music. The thing I found however is once I started using it more and more I grew to love it. I get tunes from friends mostly, in mp3 format. The rest of the stuff I rip myself with itunes but I rip it to 192VBR mp3. I would have gotten an ipod but I bought a PSP so now I slap 3 or 4 albums on there instead.

Since I paid $250 for the PSP plus like $70 for 512MB memory stick I don't really want to fork over for the ipod right now, especially cause I use it more for movies and music than games!

I currently have a silver iPod mini but I'm thinking of getting a MobiBlu 1GB Flash MP3 Player. I like the iPod shuffle but no FM reception/recording default in any iPod really sucks IMO.

So my son is saving his chores money to buy an iPOD, what should he get? He is 16, and I want to make sure he gets something that is going to work for him.

The iRiver H10 20gb mp3 players have a color screen, FM tuners/recorders, voice recorders, can display pictures, and have pretty decent battery life(16 hours). They're the same price as iPods, too.
A couple of my friends have Creative mp3 players - I'm pretty sure they're called Nomads and are relatively cheap.

The iRiver H10's are pretty sweet. Ipods are nice because there are a million accessories out there for them. The buzz on the street is that all ipods are going color and might have video within this year. A few of my friends are putting off purchases to see what happens.

There are probably other ways too, but I don't have an ipod to test!

The easiest way to copy MP3s off of an Ipod, is to mount it as a removable drive (there's a setting in itunes to do this). Then just drag your mp3s off the drive onto your home computer.
No need for special software to get things off of an ipod, getting them into an ipod is a different matter.

Just a note on this. I'd "format" the Ipod as a Windows (NTSF) drive. This way it can be used on both PC's and Mac's. If you "format" it as a Mac drive then it is only viewable on Mac's (unless you want to jump thru even more hoops).

Yup, I forot to mention that. There are ways to get a Mac formatted drive to appear in Windows, but it requires hoops, a lighter, and a ramp.
