Thanks ribdoctor. I'll try that one. I was unsure of how to bend it smoothly, but I guess it really doesn't matter. It's just going to hold charcoal and wood.
Are you on a BBQ team? The team I cook with is "MoKan Meatheads" out of Kansas City. We are using a Lang and a few purchased barrels, I'm looking to build a few extra so we can cook more than one competition on a given weekend. We've had top ten finishes in the past six KCBS compeitions including the Great American cooking primarily on UBS smokers.

will do. I'm hoping to throw four butts on it and six more on my larger smoker this weekend, that is if I can get the barrel seasoned before then.

Nice idea. As low as the inlet port is on the barrel, you may have to raise the barrel off the ground to get a decent sized fire box to attach lower than the inlet port. A five gallon metal can and some metal flex hose will get you in business pretty quick!

I think I'm going with theribdoctors suggestion and build something out of mesh that I can place in the bottom of the smoker.

I never realized building a smoker was this simple, this is awesome!
My roommate and I are planning to turn our current grill into a smoker once we buy a new grill. Thanks for the helpful links!
