When I first started smoking I was all about the 60rg, bigger means more value type thinking.
Now I really prefer the smaller rg's. I've been getting allot more 38-48 rg sticks. I really got into lancero's and petite coronas recently.
48 or less
50-54
56 or larger

I enjoy larger RG cigars for many reason and they all can be debated but there is just something special to me about RG cigars.

I myself will smoke any ring guage as long as it is a good smoke/ and time guessed to be allowed to smoke it, i do prefer a little larger size du to i think it creates better flavors throughout the whole smoke, but must admit that dirty rats are quite the great smoke, but the 6 X 60 MUWAT and feral pigs are the shizzle

Personally I prefer the 50-54 gauge, although a 49 (no choice for this?) is my preferred size, allowing me to bite on the end naturally without clenching my jaw.
I tend to favor a RG that will let me balance it with the rest of the cigar. Usually that means a RG of 48-50 and when matched with the length of a Churchill it gives me the best of both worlds. I'm not adverse to smaller or even larger RG but I tend to study the elements of the cigar of those that I will smoke with different RG...filler, wrapper, where it's from..etc.

I like 48 or less 90% of what I smoke is in that range

Smaller ring gauge cigars seem to stay cool for me. Whereas thicker cigars tend to get hotter. That's my experience anyways. That's why I prefer thinner.
So far, I seem to prefer the small ring cigars (both on overall experience and time). I agree that with some of the previous statements that they feel like they stay cooler and have a more balanced flavor profile throughout. I don't mind some of the larger rings, but I have found that I really have to have a solid 2-3 hour window to really take my time and enjoy them.
haha, this poll is basically the opposite of what retail sales indicate...goes to show that we are the minority.
My backyard is more humid than my humidor.
I tend to lean anywhere between 40 and 52. I did smoke a Inch by E.P.C today with a 62 rg and all though it was a tasty smoke , you seem to lose something in the gigantic cigar.

I tend to enjoy the mid 50 range of cigar diameters smaller are not as comfortable to me.

Reason for the heat you may be hot boxing too much slow down on how often you puff you may be able to taste more flavors since your not heating the tobacco up as much
