I usually start with tomato paste (or even ketchup) as the base and then move on from there by adding vinegar, sometimes mustard, maybe honey, possibly molassass or hoisin sauce, maybe some bourbon or rum, peppers (jalepeno or habenero), garlic, spices such as oregano cinnamon, nutmeg may be added too, and I can go on and on, but it depends on what flavor I'm looking for and/or what ingredients I have available.

Usually make my own bbq sauce using Woody's as a base. As far as hot sauce Cholula has a nice flavor but is too mild. For that type of sauce I like Tabasco or Tabasco Habanero. There used to be a Garlic Tabasco that had a nice flavor.

    Nice spice, good garlic flavor.

You'll find it at most Vietnamese restaurants, but also in most grocery stores.

i have a couple of hot sauces that i swear by. my favorite is probably Tabasco. the original.

as far as bbq sauces are concerned, im partial to Sweet Baby Ray's
I've got a great cigar collection - it's actually not a collection, because that would imply I wasn't going to smoke every last one of 'em.
