Alright, as promised, here is a review of a CAO Mx2 to compare against the Mx3 I reviewed yesterday. And to top it off....this is post 100 for me!
Althought I have a Mx2 in the humidor, it is a toro, and I wanted to review a robusto since that is what I have for the Mx3 and the Camacho Triple Maduro (review to come tonight or tomorrow). I went down to The Burning Leaf (Wicker Park) today to grab one of these sticks. The robusto comes as a 5x52, and has a dark brown wrapper with a nice oily shine. There are a number noticeable veins in the wrapper, but not too huge. The head is perfectly rounded, with a well formed cap. The overall feel of the cigar is nice and firm, with no soft areas at all. ![]() After a straight cut with my Palio, the pre-light smoke offered flavors of coffee, leather and cedar notes. The stick lit very easily and started off with a nice even burn. The flavor from the first third offered the same coffee and leather, with hints of cocoa, cedar and a little spice. I also noticed some hints of raisin with this stick too, and not just when breathing out the nose. The burn was nice and even, and the ash was very tight. ![]() The second third of the stick toned down on the coffer and leather a bit. The cedar and spice (kind of peppery) started to come out a little more, and again notes of cocoa and a little raisin showed through. If the burn got a little off line, it always caught back up to a straight line. Quite impressive. ![]() The final third of the stick had a drier flavor as it reached toward a nub. Leather and cedar dominated, with spice on the back end of the draw. There was also a flavor of dried leaves in there too. I didn't get it quite to the nub, as the dryness made it harder to go much further. ![]() Perhaps it would be better to let this one stay in humidity a little more, but it didn't seem to cause a problem through the bulk of the smoke. I think this is a pretty good stick overall, and not bad for the $5 tag. The smoke time was about 90 minutes. |

Now to compare against the Mx3. The Mx2 was overall a drier smoke, compared to a creamier flavor with the Mx3. They each had a slight issue for me to get to a nub. The Mx2 got really dry, while the Mx3 got a little harsh (possibly due to a slight plug). Overall, I like both sticks, but I prefer the creamier flavor of the Mx3 a little more than the drier flavor of the Mx2. Not to say I wouldn't smoke it again, but would probably go with the Mx3 first, with of course a bigger hit to the wallet.

Thanks for the review. I like the Mx2 also. I just happened to smoke a toro size this past Friday paired with a nice bourbon. I pretty much agree with you on the flavor profile except I have trouble picking up leather notes and I did not find it dry in the final third. As a matter of fact, I nubbed that sucker using a toothpick not to burn my fingers. The smoke stayed cool all the way and I had to set it down when I burned my lip. lol. I very much enjoyed that stick.
I smoked an Mx3 earlier this year (thanks Justin (twenty5)) and it was a great smoke, little better than the 2 I think, much smoother and a more predominant cocoa flavor if I recall correctly. He sent me 2 of them and I’m going to smoke the next one soon while I still have the Mx2 fresh in my memory.

you had a much different experience with that cigar than I did.
I received a handful of pre-releases, and every one was consistently like chocolate rum cake dusted with cayenne pepper, freaking amazing. I got uber excited, and then they finally hit shops, and god damn did I feel like I got the ol' bait and switch because the entire box I bought tasted like smoking a good-year tire. I haven't smoked one since then...maybe I should give em another shot. good review. |

Great review brotha! I can sympathize with you on the harshness at the end
with the "doubles" that CAO put's out. I had a similar problem with the LX2 at the end... Had to put it out! *lol* |
