So my neighbor goes to Mexico, knows I love cigars, and you know the rest! He drops me off a glass top box of Cohiba Espendidos :halfgrinw when he gets home.
Not to be an ass as he does not smoke cigars and it was a real nice gesture on his part, I thanked him for the gift. Could not bring myself to tell him these are fakes and he got ripped off.
Any ideas on what to do with this box :scratchhe I was going to smoke one as I cut the grass yesterday but decided not to crack the box open.
I am skeptical on what these even have in them! So what do the brothers say, pitch the box or give one a try to see if they can pass as yard gars?

I got one of these many years back too, thankfully it was only a 3 pack. I smoked one and it was just awful, cut another open and it was all short filler, tossed the other. Give it a smoke to find out, worst case like you said it would be a yard gar.

Sorry, that sucks! LOL

I definitely understand you didn't want to burst his bubble by not telling him they were fake... it was a nice gift/gesture as you say.

But I sure wish people would start telling the truth. It's the only way these fakes will stop being sold... education. Now your neighbor will buy these again the next time he's down there, and maybe for you again since you really liked them the first time. Or for someone else will get these as a gift etc. I know the fake cigars will always be sold in high tourist areas, but it just kills me to see so many people buying these without learning the truth about'em!?! LOL

edit to say: I'm not saying you did the wrong thing... it's totally your call and I have no problems with it. Just sayin it still kills me! LOL

Agree with this. Well said. Certainly a nice gesture by your neighbor though.

Idea: take some of the bands and save them. Next time you guys get together, you can put them on your cigars and he will appreciate the fact that you are enjoying them. No harm, no foul.

You don't want to make the guy feel bad.

I'll take the box. Years ago, I was in the Bahamas and was offered the same deal. There were 3 cigars in a glass top box. I knew they were fake but I wanted the box, so I bought all three and the box for like $20. When I got home, I pitched the cigars and filled the box with real Esplendidos. Nothing better then the looks on my buds faces when I'd offer them one. At least my friends were good enough to explain those were most likely fakes, but they never really looked closely at them, just saw the box and "knew". I'd smile and say no they are really good and fire one up. The looks of horror on their faces was priceless. Some of my closer friends I told them the truth, others I let believe what they wanted to believe. Alas, the box eventually fell apart but it was fun while it lasted. You should do the same.

(1) Tell him the truth!

A. so you don't get the gift again in the future
B. so your friend doesn't get ripped off again
C. maybe - one guy at a time- we can stop giving business to the fake market for CCs

(2) Trash 'em! Not worth smoking who-knows-what. I was just living down in Mexico for the last 3 months and had fun showing a buddy the dried banana leaves and string in two "Cuban" cigars we cut open - don't put that garbage anywhere near anyone's mouth...
Have to agree with all taht is said above, but really nice about it and let him know just how thoughtfull it was.

Same experience here times 4. my cousin came back from the DR all happy and shit about the score he made on 2 boxes of Cohiba, a box of Montis and a box of Davidoff. I told him they were all fake, even cut one of the Montis open, what kind of chopped up filler was inside is beyond my guess. I still have a few of them that I show around for shits and giggles, I'll get a pic up when my daughter takes a picture for me. The bands on the Davidoffs are hysterically terrible!

Thanks for the replies! I will get a few pics up when I get home from work. He is a nice guy and I think I could let him know about the fakes without hurting his feelings. He does go to Mexico once a year so I don't want him to get ripped again.
Funny thing about the box is the hasp is half rusted, the box looks obvioulsy used, the Habanos sticker in the left hand corner has been put over another sticker that was peeled off. It really SCREAMS fake!
I will probably save the box and will not take a chance on lighting one up. I will cut a few open though to see whats inside!
Pics to follow.

Thanks,

I would take them, thank him, etc ... Then a couple months later I'd tell him they were fakes. That way, it won't hurt as much and it will educate him.
