Alright so here is the deal. I have only ever smoked ONE cuban cigar in my life (Partagas Serie D No.4) and I was wondering if my fellow BOTL's can give me a heads up on what are some good maduro cubans. I have recently come into an avenue to procure some cubans but I haven't the faintest idea about cubans. I typically prefer maduro cigars so I feel like thats the type of cigar I want to try first. Any suggestions brothers? And if there arent any great maduros does anyone have any suggestions on what box I should buy first?

Yea there's only one.. IMO it's not even a good example of what Cuban cigars have to offer either. I'd recommend trying something else first but it's your call. You can even look through the habanos reviews section of the forum to see what other BOTL's thought of different CC's. might help you make a decision.

The Cohiba Maduro 5 Magicos is my favorite NC. :-D

Seriously though, the Cohiba maduros are good, but they're very different from the traditional Cuban cigar profile. For NC smokers who like maduros, I think Bolivar is a good marca to start with.

If you ignore the formal "maduro" name, there are other CC maduros... Notably in the EL releases. I'd add H Upmann Mag 48 EL as one of those, and at a reasonable price point.

There are so many other great ccs out there to try before the Chiba Maduro. I've into been impressed and like I said, there are sooooo many other great Cubans that should really be tried first.

Most of the LEs have maduro wrappers.

That said, the Cubans don't really play the wrapper game as much as the rest of the world. If it's strictly maduros you're looking for, you might want to look elsewhere.

I have found most of the Cuban ELs to be disappointing. The wrappers tend to overwhelm their profile in my experience.

If you are a big fan of Maduros, Cubans are probably not a great choice, as lergeni implies above.

Thanks for the all feedback guys...great info. Its a shame that its only the one maduro cc but you guys have given me great sticks to research for when I buy my first box. Im definitely going to check the habanos review to see what the brothers think of some of the cc's.

I typically like the maduro flavors like the cocoa, coffee, bittersweet chocolate etc. Some of my favorite sticks are the Ligas Privada line (t52, No. 9, Undercrown), Serie R maduro, La Dueña, CAO La Traviata Maduro, CAO Brazilia, camacho triple maduro and many others. I do however smoke non maduros as well. The ones I like are the ashton vsg, brickhouse, art deco, avo heritage, casa magna colorado, CAO la traviata, Cuenca Y Blanco, serie V melanio, zino platinum z class. I like to try different cigars because I never know what I might find that I will really like. Maduros are just what I consistently like and tend to go towards.

There is a reason you don't see maduro wrappers on cuban cigars. With the exception of a few EL's I stay clear. I agree with Chris that based on what you currently enjoy a great place to start would be a Bolivar, BBF to be exact and fresh 11 or 12 production. Work your way through those and then you can start refining your tastes.

Cubans really don't have cigars that showcase the heavy cocoa profiles most of the best Nicaraguans have. The Cohiba Maduro is the exception, but while tasty, it's not even as good as a good NC maduro (IMHO).

But Cubans do have something equally enchanting about them - call it honey and graham cracker, call it "twang"... it's almost unquantifiable, but it's there without question.

It sounds like you like bolder stuff. Based on that, the Bolivar Belicosos Finos is going to be right up your alley. Partegas Shorts, D4, and P2 are all good bold choices, and I like the Boli RC as well. Monte 2s are a touch milder, but one of my favorite sticks of all time. Cohiba Robustos, and Siglo IV and VI would also be stronger choices. After you've tried those, I'd bet dollars to donuts you'll have a strong appreciation for the Cuban profile, and you can start exploring other marcas and vitolas.

just to thread jack slightly, why does habanos SA by and large NOT do maduros. why has cuba never really gone that route? it's something i have generally known, but never seen an explanation of.

The Cohibas mentioned are the only ones CALLED maduros, but a lot of people refer to "Cuban maduro" as a type of wrapper. Like I think most of the ELs from recent years have been maduros, imvho that's why so many of them taste similar. "Maduro" isn't a shade of color, it's a matter of how the leaf is fermented.
