I know everyone's taste are different, but which brands do you avoid? I'm new to cigars but I highly dislike RP, Gurkha, RyJ. What are your brands. I only ask because there are so many brands and they look and sound great but are just crap and I'm trying to avoid those as well.

I definitely have my brands that I avoid, but I also feel it's important for someone to learn their likes/dislikes by themselves. Take the time, smoke a wide range of cigars and figure out what you do and don't like. :)

What he said, never avoid a cigar because some say it sucks, find out for yourself.

Same can be said for recommended brands. Just because some may like it, you may not.

Imo, focus on what you enjoy rather than do not. If you find a profile you like look over the reviews from reviewers you seem to share similar preference with and you'll have better luck finding sticks that hit the mark with you. .02

For me, I just smoke what Mojo likes. He has great taste imo. :)

Gotta agree with Aloha on this plus I have tried a stick that I didn't like before tried it again later in life or with age to it and enjoyed it. Your palate will change and develop as you smoke. I started with acid cigars (which I loved) and now I don't care for them.

Well I use to avoid RP then I was handed a Cameroon 2003 and loved it.

I use to avoid the NC Trinadad but then I was given a Paradox from my local b&m owner and loved it.

I use to avoid NC R y J but then was gifted a ROMEO from an active memeber in the stan and loved it.

When it comes to cigars ive learned that an open mind to new blends even if from a brand I normally dont care for is best.

I am fairly new as well, yet I've learned through what experience I've had, to shy away from the brands that are focused on quantity. RP, AB, Gurkha, Vegas, etc. Generally, those that are fairly well represented by the big three catalog vendors. I seek out small batch like CH, La Palina, Reinado, and others. I also don't smoke enough to need a lot of quantity so I am focused on quality and time tested smokes Anejos, LP, OpusX, etc. It's all good though, because even a shit cigar is better than no cigar at all.

feel free to try anything at least twice, to be fair. we ain't the ones smoking them, you are. tastes change, tastes evolve, and both do so SO VERY rapidly when you are still learning, you just have to smoke to enjoy until you smoke what YOU enjoy.

WB brings up an excellent point, though: shadow someone on the board. if you see them posting about stuff you personally have loved, then try some of their other faves. hell, send a nice PM or respond to their posts, you might make a connection with a good dude, AND find the one you cigar are waiting for!

I had steered clear of RP for the last year because of several I had had being awful. Smoked an RP freedom tonight and really enjoyed it. Not one I would go hunting for, but still a very mellow enjoyable smoke for the evening. And I always have a few 5 vegas or nc RyJ in the humidor for friends who love them and an occasional yard work smoke. Always finding new things I love and new things I hate, and sometimes smokes switch columns year to year.

The brands keep the same name but the blends are always changing. I've had some of my favorite brands become my brands to avoid (Bahia, Padilla) while being surprised by other cigars I had nearly written off (SLR, Upmann, Macanudo)

I second the opinion that keeping a spot in your rotation for trying new things and revisiting old brands is a good idea.

I have enjoyed certain varieties of each of the three brands on your "no" list. I don't think I would write off an entire brand, just certain cigars of that brand that I did not enjoy. But if I have to make a generality: I don't like cameroons, including the Oliva G. (Now that puts me in a weird minority....which all goes to show that everyone's tastes are different.) On the other hand, I enjoy the Oliva G Maduro. So it's not the brand that is the issue.
