BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I like go out and saw my own tree down. My neighbor does frown on it though when he catches me in his backyard at 3 am. :yes:
Actually, we are using 3/5's of the fake tree my parents put in their house. The do the winter in Florida thing and had no need for it. They gave it to us but that thing is so bloody big that I could only use the top 3 pieces.

Always growing up we had a real tree. However the wife and I know have a fake tree for a couple reasons, first one is cause the dogs like to chew on a real one, but ignore the fake one. Second reasons is my wife see no point in killing a tree so it can be on display for several weeks then tossed aside to die. She tries to be eco smart. If its a year we are not having xmas dinner at our house we have no tree just the outside lights.
For years and years we went to a local Christmas tree farm - searched the farm for about three or four hours looking for the perfect tree (Fraiser Fir by the way) -cut it down ourselves once we finally located it - loaded it up and drove home - drag it out and recut the trunk so it would be a good fresh cut for maximum water suckage - get it in the house and wrestle it into the stand - spend 30 minutes debating on whether or not it was straight and looked good from any angle you chose to look at it from - drag out the lights - plug em in and see which ones weren't working and spend another 30 minutes getting them all to light up - get em on the tree - sweep all needles that have fallen off of the tree and by now I have had all of the Christmas tree I can stand for one day - next day I kick back and sip a little rum or bourbon while I watch the wife and kids (back when they were still here) get all of the ornaments on the tree!
About two years ago we got a great feal on a 7' pre-lit tree and I love it!!!!! :applause:

When we were firstmarried we would go out in the boonies of northern Az and cut a pinion pine. Now we usually go with a 9 to 10 footer from a guy that "holds" one for us. They frown on cutting down trees in the woods here. The farm trees are just too small.
when i was younger, my dad and i would head out to our hunting land and cut our own. those were by far the best trees. now, i go to a nearby tree farm where you pick the tree and the guy cuts it for you. you can show up year round and "reserve" the tree you want and they'll hold it for you. so when i pick up our tree next week, ill pick out our's for next year too.

Very interesting.
I would have thought that real would have won out by a lot.
I wonder if maybe five years ago it would have been different. Seems to me fake trees used to be much more expensive...or at least the nice ones cost a lot more then the crappy ones then they do now.

I know they have gotten better at making them. I remember when all but the uber expensive ones had that really crappy looking stringing pine needle like crap...the flat strips of plastic.
Now they are so close to looking real it is really hard to tell.
Also, they are redusing the cost by using the older really fake looking stuff in the interior and the really nice, very real loooking needles on the outermost branches.
Reduces the cost and makes the tree look REALly good.

i believe they are made so much better than they used to.... and the set up is getting much easier. i'll have mine up and ready for decorating in a matter of minutes. pre-lit and all! just don't put the icicles on.
