Being a cigar lover and a bit of a perfectionist and egghead I've arrived at the following question: has anyone ever heard of and can source me a hygrometer with a long very thin needle like probe I could insert into the foot of a cigar to test the exact moisture level of my cigar (without messing It up) ? Not surprisingly, I've googled and come up with nothing.

The reason for this is I find an incredible amount of performance diversity in the same cigar based on where it is dryness wise at the time of smoking. As most of you know, the 70/70 (or 65/65 depending on which school you come from) rule of thumb is useful as a general rule for storing and aging but woefully innacurate when it comes to optimal smoking humidity level for individual sticks. Ring gauge, leaf type, ligero/nicotine content, etc all dictate different optimal dry box levels for each - meaning we are relegated to a lot trial and error and guess work until we come up with what we prefer for each cigar we enjoy. There's got to be a better way. I'd love to be able to test the actual humidity of a stick using said probe, note that, then smoke it, noting its performance arriving at the answer much quicker (with fewer bad smoking sessions in the process).

If such a thing doesn't exist (or is prohibitively expensive) sounds like something someone be needs to invent. Any engineers reading this who have knowledge on how a hygrometer works? Could the sensor part of a hygrometer even be crafted into a thin needle? If that is impossible based on the physics of it all, would be great to know that so I can end the search.

Xikar? Bill Nye the Science Guy? are you reading this?

32 views and no comments. Hmm. Stunned silence must mean theres just no such thing. If I were a rich man - I'd invent one myself.

Imagine being able to tell instantly the actual humidity level of the stick you are about to smoke. No more rolling it between my fingers acting like I know what I'm listening for.

So let me change the question:

Fro the sake of discussion, what would you be willing to pay for a device that could tell you instantly the moisture/humidity level INSIDE your cigar without messing up the stick or even poking a hole in it.

You gotta be shittin me. Just found this:

https://www.google.com/patents/US6604409

Looks like the Inventor failed to pay the maintenance fees on the patent in 2007. It's up for grabs.

Somebody please stop me before I set up a Gofundme campaign.

A cool idea but my guess is that it was never produced because it was just not economically feasible.

As cigar nerds we might buy them but in reality the total market for something like this is probably pretty small. Just not enough profit potential to make it worthwhile.

True. A lot of money to get something like this developed and on the street. My thought is if a big operator with deep pockets and a long game plan got behind it and got the price point down to like $30 for a dependable device that was small, quick and easy to use it would be as common as the humidity readers we buy now. I know personally I'd pay 4 times that if it was on Amazon today and it had good ratings. It would pay for itself pretty quickly for me - I can't count how many smokes Ive had to put down very early because they smoked horribly due to improper humidity level.

Since this patent works off of the simple principle of electric current being passed between the two probes through both ends of the cigar, i wonder if couldn't jerry rig a basic soil moisture reader to perform the task now. I remember my grandmother had one of these, made by miracle grow I think. Had two thin pointy prongs and you just stuck it in the dirt and an analog meter hopped to whatever moisture level was in the soil, but these are hyDrometers, not hyGrometers. Maybe that is the issue that caused the patent to be abandoned. Cigar leaves are not soil. hmm.

Random thought, but if you've pitched countless smokes due to impproper humidity, maybe the problem is with your humidor?
I can see this being possible but not in my case. I'm very meticulous with my storage, have all the gadgets (of course) and know how to do it. It's this meticulousness that makes me want the device so I can take the guesswork out.

For the sake of discussion, I wouldn't use it if you paid me. But I just smoke cigars, I'm not fancy.

If you could figure out the math to convert the hydrometer reading to the you'd be set.
