I believe cigar smoking is a personal and individual experience that really shouldn't be criticized by other smokers. That being said when it comes to lighting your cigar- how do you do it? Personally I used the cedar wood chips from boxes or wood matches. This is the only real rule that I follow and I frown upon direct lighter ignition. Mostly, I don't want any butane influence on the taste. It really doesn't matter much just a nuance that experienced smokers notice the difference. Botl try to go exclusively wood matches, see if over time you notice the difference. If not you might just be smoke low quality cigars Haha

I do a lot of BBQ and slow smoking in my wood burner. The reason I use a wood burner instead of a gas smoker is because the wood burner imparts lots of additional flavors into the meat where as the gas smoker doesn't. I believe you would have to have a very refined palate, a very bad butane lighter, really crappy fuel or your sucking in while lighting to taste the flavor of butane.
One of the reasons to use cedar spills is the subtle cedar taste they may add to the cigar.

Bringing the cigar up to heat at a lower temp will definitely help rather than scorching the shit out of it with a torch. I usually slown roast with a soft flame butane lighter, however butane burns hotter than wood, albeit cleaner.
