I am just listing a couple of recent suprises. I find it interesting to read about suprises, Cheap cigars that ending up being pretty good and vice versa.

Positive Suprise
I just smoked the Gurkha Sherpa. I bought this as a single from CI. I read a review about peanuts and greatness. I must say it is not bad at all. And the peanut comment was actually true. It is light and easy to smoke. Kind of a smokey peanut with little bit of sweetness on the end that is pleasing. The deal is pretty amazing too. You can get (20 toros 6 X 50) for 40. Just don't expect anything more than mild.

Negative Suprise
I came across a C Monte Cristo #2. I paid 20 bucks for it. It was a good cigar, but I would have just as well smoked a $12 Gurkha. I mean it was a great cigar but I just expected a creamy Gurkha or something more unbelievable for such a famed cigar, it did not come close to the same fame Romeo y Julieta. Maybe I am crazy. :riflefire

I smoked about 2" of a Gurkha Sherpa once--then let it die in the ash tray. I'd think I'da done better by just smoking the ashtray.

Positive: Tat Black (I know!!!) I knew it was good, but I didn't think it would be THAT good.

Negative: Rocky Patel decade. What a terrible smoke!

Positive: HdM Regalos LE 2007 - if you read my review you know I fell in love with this stick after a bad bad start.

Negative: Davidoff Special "R" - this was the first non-Cuban I smoked and absolutely hated it even though I'd read some great reviews for Davidoff cigars. It was extremely one dimensional and boring I might as well have rolled up my money and lit it.

The 5 Vegas Gold pleasantly surprised me. It was given to me by a friend, I'd never heard of it. He told me how inexpensive it was, and that coupled with the kinda hokey looking band, I figured it was a polished turd. But hey, I'm broke lately, I'll smoke it if I got it :smokingbo and damned if it wasn't a pretty good smoke!

On the other hand, I haven't tasted a NC RyJ that impressed me. I'm still pretty noobish, I've only had a couple, maybe I just lucked onto a couple bad ones in a row :dunno:

Positive - Spanish Galleon Corojo (atlantic): If I was blind tasting, I might have actually thought this was a Tatuaje brown label. This is incredibly good! Especially when you can get a 5er for $18.

Negative - CAO black maduro - put it out after first 1/3.
(Worst cigar of the yr goes to a plugged & exploding monte #2, most of em I've really enjoyed though..)

Positives: CI Legends Yellow label Pepin. Not that i exepcted anything less, but for the price they are fantastic, and his other stuff is getting so expensive with his new found fame and all.

Padilla 1932 Lancero - Sure it got a great rating, adn no it's not a chepa cigar, but i had my first a week or so ago and it was fantastic! Lived up to my expectations and then some.

DPG Blue Preferidos - These things are super tastey!!! Ranks right up there in terms of being a flavor bomb as teh Illsuione MK and the Tat Angeles.

Negatives: I had a maduro once i really didnt care for.

+ Top Shelf Signature Select (green-DPG) - Was gifted to me - I'd never heard of it and judging by the look of the band, I expected a yard gar -- parked the mower in the middle of the yard and had to go sit down and enjoy this one. Wow.

- Man O' War - Maybe just my tastebuds the night I tried it, but I smoked over 3 inches waiting for flavor before I tossed it.

The first two Camacho Triple Maddies were outstanding, the next three were nowhere near as flavorful. I thought it might be my palette, but three? Give me a break! I only drink ice water or coffee with my cigars. For all the hype and the big price tag, you would expect consistency.

I'm a big gurkha fan and they just haven't let me down. Not a fan of the Sherpa though.

+ RP R4 Maduro...got a free bundle with a box purchase...I thought it was a typical RP very well balanced, perfect burn, nice white ash...Pleasantly surprised!

- Tatuaje Havana Hermoso....The cigar bar had to replace it twice before I got one that actually pulled...Then it was more of a let down than fruit stripe gum....

"um.......aww"

Haven't tried too much new stuff recently. Apparently the Cruzados are fantastic, as are the new Augusto Reyes maduros.

As for negatives, it's been a horrible week for me. Here's what I've tried that I have been just absolutely disappointed with:

-2005 God of Fire Double Robusto by Don Carlos. I've had a couple of these before and they were fantastic! Must have been a bad stick, but at $20+ I don't want to have to deal with bad sticks!

-Davidoff Winston Churchill. This smoke was so earthy it tasted like mildew. Very well-constructed cigar, just not what I was hoping for. Great stick if you like very earty cigars.

-2008 Camacho Liberty. This was a much milder smoke than I was expecting. That and I just plain don't like the shape of these things! They're very awkward-looking. Worth another shot, tho, since I've only had one of them. I like to try everything at least 4 or 5 times, just to be sure. It took me about 6 tries with the CAO Italia before I started liking it.

+: Padron 1926. I know that it does not need to be said, but every damn time I smoke these things I go to another dimension. Just beyond amazing and worth repeating over and over and over and over.

-: Rocky Patel Edge. I'm gonna get jumped for it, but I just can't stand these things. It's funny how subjective cigars really are- the PR on these is very high.

I had some cigars today that were pleasantly surprising!
Reyes Family Classic and Premier lines, along with the Cienfuegos line.

Positive: Cohiba Piramide EL-2006...I couldn't believe Cohiba could make a powerhouse like this. It is now in my top 2 favorite smokes.

Negative: Partagas Churchill Deluxe-1999 (i believe) Absolutely disgusting. I have never smoked a CC that tasted that bad.
