Couple of days ago I had a VR Clásicos at a herf and everybody was talking, drinking and having a good time and I was just sitting and could not believe a cigar with 5 years on it could develop flavors like this.
It took about 15 minutes before the guys was wondering why I was sitter , not saying a word and smiling like an idiot.
I usually do a lot of talking and I just passed the cigar around so they could taste it.
Well then we where 6 idiots just sitting and staring at each other and smiling.
The smell of it was amazing before i lit it. Chocolate and mint.
I have NEVER EVER had a cc with this much "in your face" flavors. Nothing over powering but just a perfect harmony of fruit, chocolate, mint and cracker. With every puff my grin got bigger and I only have 2 left from that box. I did a trade with a friend and got 3.

Any of you guys had a good VR lately?

Have not have any recent production, but older Unicos, Famosos & DAs were all firmly in the "good, not great" catagory. Would not turn one down, but in no hurry to buy any either.

Well I must say that I've not had many VR's but I've had some amazing ones... Recently a friend gifted me a 97' Famosos that I smoke on my birthday. It was like smoking an opus x but with that wonderful cuban earthiness, just amazing. Now with the recent challenges it looks to me like VR's are a bit out of reach.

That's a great call Ben.

I smoke quite a lot of VR, usually a few dozen per month. The dirty little seceret with these is, there hasn't been a bad box since '05. The piramides are generally the best, with the Famosos, in a close 2nd. They are extraordinarily, well balance with just a hint more dimension than the Montecristos, and a bit more strength than the H. Upmann. Not to be forgotten the Familiars and Classicos, are highly desirable, and often un-noticed.

Cheers

I guess I should have fully readed your post as I assumed you were talking about recent production VR's. So I voted No, but I'd like to.

While I'm a big fan of the entire VR line I prefer the smaller RG's. The Classicos are one of my favorite Lonsdales and as Don Andres mentioned the Familiars are very good cigars that often go un noticed.

My 1998 Classicos are deffinatly a go to cigar when I want something really good.

Yes I have and I thought they were just okay. Maybe the box I got wasn't as food as yours, but it was from 08, that I know for sure. Anyways I traded them to a local friend for some other cigars I liked.

Although I am not inclined to large rg, I do not hesitate to recommend the Unico. perhaps they are a bit airy in the 1st 1/3, but they do not need long to get to the sweet spot, and the sweet spot is very long in this cigar.
