I was just wondering what everyone's opinion is on what exactly makes a good (or great) cigar shop/lounge. Friendly and knowledgeable staff? Decor? Drinks? Selection of smokes? The patrons? Hot girls? Events?

I think a good place will always have that certain je ne sais quoi about it. I think it's a combination of the above.

What does everyone think?

Not smoke filled. Proper ventilation is important to me. I smoke outside for the most part. I have been in some B&M that it got hard to see across the room when a herf is going on. Lounge chairs, I want to relax and smoke not sit in a hard plastic chair or bench. Obviously good cigars that I like to smoke. Drinks, not too important. Most here in the DFW area are "clubs" only one that I go to that just opened has a full service restaurant and bar. Nice, but they could improve on the "eye-candy" that serve us. Knowledgable staff is cool as I do not keep up on the industry news like "Charles, the wonder boy", so most the time I just want to smoke my cigar.

First and foremost knowledgeable staff. You're just not going to do well (in any business) if you don't know what in the hell you're talking about. Friendliness is also a must. Then the environment has to be comfortable...in other words I have to want to spend time there. And part of that is the people, part is the store's decor/ambiance. Selection of smokes is also going to score points. The local store here doesn't carry Tats, Padrons, or Liga Privada :cryloud:. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

For me, It's got to be knowledgeable staff, comfortable environment, selection, a fun clientele and drinks (or at least be BYOB). The owner of the shop/lounge I go to rolls a wide variety of his own cigars and so naturally he's extremely knowledgeable. If only he some eye candy behind the bar other than his bald face...

People is the main thing i think. If you have crappy staff that doesn't know jack about cigars or is rude, I'll go somewheres else.
Selection is number two. You got to have your staples (General, CAO, Altadis etc..), but you also got to have some LEs (V maduo, LFD Mysterio etc...).
A place to smoke is a tie with selection, I have a great B&M about 30mins from my house that has awesome staff & selection, but can't smoke in there. I wish they would open a shop outside a mall where I could smoke with the owners.
Events are nice, a good way to bring people in to learn more about a certain compnay or cigar.
Food & Drinks is a good way to keep clientel. Free is great, but just having them there helps alot.

Those deffinatly do help draw business!!!

Personally, I think the je ne sais quoi cigars are highly overrated....I could care less if they were part of the equation.....

Very Nice Dave!!! Boobs is #1.

I would want knowledgeable staff, comfortable spacious lounge, good ventilation, nice selection of cigars, drinks a definite plus, and great people to smoke with of course.

Selection, Staff, and a good place to chill. Also some of the best and worst people can be the other costumers that shop there.

TONS of room. You should be able to fit a LOT of large-scale furniture in there, and the walk-in humidor needs to be gigantic, with places to hold your "secret" stash for your best customers (or those you are trying to entice).

Friendly people. I have found that I forgive a lot if the people make the experience enjoyable. A liquor license is nice but I will make due with beer and wine or just a G rated beverage. But hey, where I live I'd be happy if a lounge existed out here. I need to move out of the sticks.

I would agree that you need a healthy combination of those factors. The comfort level is very important though, so you will want to come back.

People is most important. Both staff & customers must make it an enjoyable place to hang out and smoke. I'll never return if either are not pleasant to be around. They should be knowledgeable for most customers, but I can overlook some lacking knowledge because I'm comfortable with cigars. I can look up info if I want specifics beyond the basics the staff can provide. So, personally their knowledge is not a deal breaker...unless it would cause problems with proper cigar storage (ie. Mold, dry cigars, or off flavors)

Smoking space & ventilation are second. I want a comfortable chair to sit in when smoking my cigar. I also don't want to choke or have my eyes sting because of a smoke filled lounge.

As long as they have a decent selection and the above two, I'll frequent it. If I want a better selection or a specific cigar, il go to a different shop, the Internet, or other BOTLs to get it. Luckily for me, there are several shops in the immediate Dallas area that I can get almost anything locally.

I guess location needs to be mentioned. If it's too far from the house, visits would obviously be less frequent. I'm not going to drive an hour when a suitable shop is only 10 minutes from my house.

BYOB is my preferred way to go on the alcohol. But a bar is nice if it's not your local shop with your preferred beverage in your locker. The bar can limit what your options for things like scotch and wine.
