Now that I have my pocket carry situation squared away, I have been thinking about something bigger for home defense and more enjoyable range time than mouseguns provide. I have been looking at .40's in particular and wondered what you guys would recommend in the $400-500 range. TIA.

I got my HK USP .40 used at a gun show for $500. Wonderful gun. Shoots like a dream. Has proven to be very reliable and easy to shoot. I can put 100's of rounds through it at the range and it doesn't beat me up. Very smooth for an auto. I have loved every HK handgun that I have had an opportunity to shoot.

Not exactly what you asked, but I would advise against .40. 9mm or larger is more than adequate for self defense. 9 will also be cheaper for range time.

I'd recommend Glock any day of the week. I like my M&P, but design wise - it is not the best gun out there. You really can't go wrong with either, but for your money - I'd say Glock.

+1 for the glock. and the .40! however, disagree on the 9. too fast of a round... usually goes threw intended target and whatever's behind it. imo.

Well, the 40 is actually a higher pressure, higher velocity round. You'll notice most guns that have kaboomed were chambered in 40. Youll also notice that professionals like Larry Vickers only use handguns in 9 or 45.

But ultimately use what you are most comfortable with and train train train train.

I just picked up a Springfield XD .45 ACP and I love it! I know this doesn't pertain to the .40 question, but I just wanted to talk about my new gun:tazerblas

Glock model 22. I have put tens of thousands of rounds threw mine without a hiccup. I like the .40 round. It's that perfect combination of stopping power and ammunition capacity.

If you like the idea of. 40 s&w, have you given any thought to a 10mm? I'm really more of a wheelgun guy, but ballistically speaking, 10mm is a great round. Colt delta elite in 10mm would make a phenomenal range toy/home defense weapon.

(Better yet would be a S&W model 610, Smiths big frame 10mm revolver.)

I've always said the .40 is a very good compromise between the 9mm and .45. I have a .40 and .45 (both are Glocks) and like them each. To me, the .40 actually has more of a kick to it than the .45. The .40 fits my hand better.

Back to the original topic...if I were to pick up another .40 and were going to stay with the Glock I'd definitely go with a compensated model. I haven't had a chance to check their website, but I believe the designation for this model is .40C or 22C. The pistol is slightly thinner in addition to being ported. It's very comfortable to hold and fire.

I had a Sig 226 .40... Very nice handgun, never had any malfunctions with it... Felt like it was part of my hands ( very comfortable) ultimately I sold it though. I felt like the .40 was a very snappy round to fire... I felt more comfortable with my 9mm and even like the .45 better... See if any friends have a .40 you can try out, even better try out a 9mm, .40, and a .45.... See what feels best for you.

One thing to keep in mind with the compensated models is that they direct the combustion UP threw the top of the slide in order to reduce muzzle lift. The down side of that is if you are using it as a home defense weapon, you are likely to need it in low light conditions. The flash is Likely to interfere with your low light vision making it harder to acquire a target for a follow up shot.

Just my 2 cents

I like the way my Glock 22 fits my hand and it's plenty accurate if I do my part.

I had a Springfield XDM 40 that was an excellent handgun, but I sold it...wish I had it back.

Since you specifically reference "home defense" go for more power and knock down. WRT .40's I carry a G27 for my daily CC but also have the G23 and G22 (duty). My home weapon of choice is the G21 - .45. Just prefer to not worry about the intruder.

As mentioned in some of the posts above, I would stay away from any of the compensated weapons. If you fire it at night, in your bedroom or house, you're going to lose any night vision that you have.

stay safe, stay armed.

Thanks to all for your input, gang, and keep 'em coming. Especially thanks for the comments re: compensated firearms. I had been wondering about the pros and cons, and I think the night vision aspect is a deal-killer for me.

My HD gun is a S&W M&P .40 . Having large hands this fits perfect , couldn't go Glock due to the contoured grips.... my fingers didn't fit right around the grip. The M&P has an adjustable back strap in 3 sizes to fit you palm. Personaly I would choose one with out an external safety...don't want to fumble when seconds count.

Ditto on the H&K USP. I have a compact in .40 and they are great guns. The newer ones are pretty darn cool as well.
