Hey guys, being new to piping, knowing what tobacco's to buy is making my head spin! Help!

If you guys could please take just a little time to think through the tobacco's you have had, think every noob should try etc., etc. it would really go a long way in helping me and probably a lot of guys after me. Heck, it might remind you of a few you forgot or missed.

If you could just cut and paste the format below and add your selections, I'll start to collect the inputs and place them in order by most often referenced in this original post. Of course any elaboration would be great - but not mandatory.

I have purposely not included tobaccos to not try.

Thanks again.

McClelland "Christmas Cheer"
McClelland "Anniversary"
justforhim.com Middle Earth Pipeweed Series "Shortcut to Mushrooms"

Not so much, I'll smoke anything.
Just so happens I fancy VA forward baccy and McClelland seems to do VA like Ruger does .22s!

I don't really follow the "categories" you listed. Every one of them I think is something special that I would happily smoke every day and think everyone should try...

1 - Staples and Noob Must Try: EVERYTHING. o)
but really, just try the field enough to get a sense of what each archetype is. burley, virginia (and SO many different styles of virginia), latakia, orientals (especially if you can pick that apart into different varietals), perique, etc.

2 - Everyday Tobaccos I Have Come To Fancy: carter hall. straightforward old school "just a smoke".

3 - "Exotics" I Like Periodically: i haven't gotten far enough along to say that anything is "exotic", so much as it is all still really really new and shiney!

3.1 - My recommendation is too original to fall into the other categories hence - Other :): try nightcap from dunhill, as that was THE tobacco that let me actually start to understand pipe.

P.S. - are you a brand whore? nope. too many good people doing good work.

I am still a newbie but have come to really enjoy Boswell Tobacco.. I really enjoy their aromatic Berry Cobbler and Pipers Pleasure but ordered a variety of aro and English and enjoyed all on a different level... And then of course the popular 1-Q is pretty good... I find myself more on the aromatic side being a newbie

Not a thing on these lists that I would change. But I will add some thoughts:
  • If you go with Dunhill's Nightcap, go for the Early Morning Pipe as well for contrast and comparison
  • I am a fan of the H&H Admirality. It's quite a nice English blend
  • In addition to the SPC Mississippi River (a great tobacco, IMHO) try their Plum Pudding for the same reason - contrast and compare.
  • An aromatic that everyone should try is Sutliff's Molto Dolce
  • I've also become a fan of Sleepy Hollow
  • Boswell's Northwoods
  • I also like CAO Black, but it's an aro. If you're interested in trying it, it's available on the Devil's site occasionally for quite cheap.
As for the Frog Morton series, my favorite is the Cellar but On The Bayou and Across the Pond are also really tasty.
