Rhodesian or Bulldog, that is the question.
Some think the differences are whether or not it is a bent (Rhodesian) or straight (Bulldog) pipe. Some, including myself, like to think the difference is whether or not the pipe has a diamond shank. I've also been know to call some of then "Bulldesians" or my favorite, "Rhodedogs".
Little history lesson first. (I know, BORING) Southern Rhodesia was an unrecognized country in South Africa know today, at least in part, as Zimbabwe. It was a British colony from 1923 thru 1980. Rhodesia was named after Cecil Rhodes yada yada yada.
Now on to pipes. As it was explained to me, Rhodesian pipes came about because pipes, being somewhat delicate, were being damaged while enroute via ship etc. to South Africa to the British military, colonists, explorers etc.
So as i understand, on a Rhodesian pipe all the edges were taken off. The shank was made a bit thicker and it was made slightly bent, I assume so the pipe wouldn't be in the line of sight. The pipe would fit in a shirt pocket easily and not chip, or crack at the shank.
I am a huge Bulldog and Rhodesian fan. They together make up the greatest percentage of my collection.
So what's your opinion on the matter? Are you a fan? Know a little more history?
