A few of you have asked for me to post this, so, here it is:

1 part castor oil
1 part olive oil
1 part grape seed oil
8-12 drops of essential oil, flavor of your choice

It's great, works well, and is much cheaper than anything on the market. You can pick up everything you need in one trip to the grocery store. There are a ton of recipes out there, do a search and pick your poison. This is my favorite as most go heavy on the castor oil, which makes the product heavier than I prefer.

You can make your own essential oil, it takes a while but you can make a ton and it'll last forever. YouTube has several helpful videos, but the short version is to take a bottle of grade seed oil (it is the cleanest medium, almost no scent), heat it in a pan on the lowest setting (you do not want it too hot, very low heat is all that's needed, you're steeping, not cooking), and add whatever you want to infuse it with (if you want citrus, just use the peel). Steep it for several hours, the longer you steep it, the more concentrated it will be. I don't do this as it's a pain and essential oil is cheap and comes in lots of good flavors of stuff I can't easily acquire. In the winter I use saddle wood and I the summer I use citrus/eucalyptus.

This is worth the time. You can make enough to last the rest of your life for the same price as one bottle from the art of shaving. Their recipe, btw, is equal parts castor and olive oil with some essential oil.

If you have a favorite recipie, please share it.

straight jojoba oil, as i have not gone deep enough yet to try this. also, the jojoba works real well in the hair, too. for $12 on drugstore.com (i think?) i found a bottle that should be big neough to be a year's supply.

Thanks Adam, I still have yet to try getting into the pre-shave oil realm yet but have been wanting to. I have only looked at pre-made mixtures so far.

I was a Shave Secret guy; I liked the small bottle for travel, but it is more $$ per oz. I recently tried Hollywood Beauty Tea Tree Oil; it's only a few bucks for 2oz at Walmart (in the 'ethnic' hair care area). I love the smell, works great and much less expensive than Shave Secret.

Also, remember, it doesn't have to smell like anything. If you don't care about the scent of something that you're going scrape off your face a few seconds later, leave out the essential oil and save the money.

I have so much citrus kickin' right now, I am going to make some essential oil and give this a go. If it works, I am bottling and passing around to all you dudes...

Thanks Adam!

Any chance we could get a moderator to sticky this?

I just made some..

equal parts
light olive oil
grape seed oil
sunflower oil

5-6 drops lavender

I prefer no castor oil or less then an equal part to keep it thinner.

Sean, If you did make citrus essential oils I'd love to try some and hear about your experience!
I've been researching the oils myself to start refilling the plug-in scent bottles for the house, but it looks like it can serve dual purpose and I'll have to whip up some homemade shave oils as well.
Thanks guys!

When buying essential oil, get massage or food grade oil. I don't imagine the stuff they make for defusers, etc. will be kind to your skin.

Exactly! That's why the wife and I want to make our own. The carriers in the marketed fragrance oils usually contain phthalates, parabens, and other undesirables which we don't care to be putting in the air, especially since we're currently having baby talks. Stay away from these! I know this seems contradictory to my newfound cigar/pipe hobby, but it's not all about me...

just wanted to bump this as thanks to adam, the shave oil recipe is SOLID! went with a 1/1/1 grape, castor, and subbed jojoba for olive (because i had it on hand). might have screwed uptheessential oil, or the stuff i got sucked, but i went really light with it, so no harm no foul.

for any of y'all doing DE without shave oil (or even cart shaving), you totally should try it. besides trapping in moisture and providing a lower-friction surface for the shave, it is a great way to condition the skin too.

affordable solution with great results. o)

So I ran out of my last batch today and made some more. I altered the recipe a bit and I like it a lot better.

For a 2 ounce bottle:

2 tablespoons castor oil
1 tablespoon jojoba oil
1 tablespoon olive oil (EVOO)
Cedarwood and Jasmine essential oils (about 10 drops of each)

My previous recipe only had the castor and olive oils but I found it a bit too thick so I replaced 1 tablespoon of castor oil with the 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil and it thinned it out just enough.

I'll keep this as my recipe
