So I’m at a year now of when I first began this slippery slope.
A lot I have learned, much here and some abroad, and a lot in trial and error.
As a fan of corn cob pipes I thought I would start celebrating once a year around this time and treat myself to something more than just a cob pipe as I have around 15 of them now.
I want once a year to begin amassing some briar pipes.
Looking to start small on the money side so no more than $45, what would you suggest?
I have read some good things about Dr Grabows and Mr Brogs as well but the tobacco shops around me don’t carry anything under $80 when it comes to briars so I would most likely be purchasing it online.
Any suggestions or things to look out for?
As always, many thanks to y’all!

Been almost a year for me as well, really enjoy this hobby. Pipesandcigars.com usually has something on sale in that price range and you can get quality estates from there and smokingpipes.com. I've not have good luck with either of those brands in that price range, their pipes tend to smoke hot for me as do the inexpensive Stanwells.

I think Rossi is the inexpensive line from Savinelli, they have some nice looking pipes.

I was super disappointed in the Mr Brog I bought, and would suggest a hard pass on those.. thoroughly impressed with a cheap ($50) unknown brand I found on Amazon, Watson by Golden Gate (out of the Ukraine) I also have a Chacom Turbo that was gifted, that I really like. Excellent quality, and pretty cheap.

Definitely check out Smokingpipes.com estate pipe section. And Savinelli’s are awesome but their prices are a little high on some of their lines BUT IMHO worth it. Actually, that was my first briar pipe I purchased aside from the cheap Dr Grabow that started me in piping.

As much as I love cob pipes, I also love a good briar pipe. Boswell’s pipes (boswellpipes.com) sells handmade pipes released every tuesday morning online and his prices aren’t bad. If you see one you like there jump on it because they’re one and done creations.

Ha, Josh is going to hook you up. I have enjoyed cleaning up old estate pipes and have found a couple good smokers for less than $20 and also some great old classics for under $50.
I really need to rethink my address being public....
I haven’t had any luck yet finding estate pipes. I have seen some incredible hauls but where I live they are usually gone by the time I find out there were pipes available. Pretty rural area and I should get out more I know. One day.....

I haven't searched anywhere locally, I pick them up on eBay. It's a little bit of a gamble so on nicer(more expensive) pipes I only buy from the seasoned ebay sellers with a history of selling pipes. Tons of cheap ones under $15-20 shipped that need a good cleaning/polishing and someone to smoke them.

Had some bad experiences with eBay over the years, mostly guitar related purchasing and swore it off like the plague. I may have to rethink that now that you bring it up.

I’m glad your address was in your profile. I have a Briar or two that needs a good home .

Enjoy... I thought I put 3 in there. Well may have to reload hahahaha. But really enjoy. Some find that they will only smoke cobs so didn’t want you to waste your money and then only want to smoke cobs

The cob of the year pipe with a bent stem.
One Briar i can find info on the other looks familiar but hot markings. The one pictures with the cob and tobaccos is from a company that has quite a history if what I’m finding online is correct.
And yes, there were three, somehow I missed this beautiful one and had to retrieve it hiding in the wrapping paper......

I’m so dumbfounded and grateful. Still shocked really.

I've got a cheap (but still briar) Mr Brog a while ago that I'm relatively satisfied with, but it took a while to get to that stage. If I was looking to spend that same amount of money on pipes again, I'd probably look for decent cobs instead.

It's hard to beat a cob.. they're just nothing to look at! Lol.. I've got several myself, and can't wait to get a couple of "forever stems" to really finish off the customizations.

By the way, since we're talking pipes, and Mr Brog, what's your take on pear wood?

I note that Mr Brog, beside significantly hiking up their prices, offer a lot of pear wood pipes nowadays. Compared to a cob, a pear would pipe at least looks like a "real pipe", but apart from that, the position of a cheaper alternative to briar is already (and successfully) filled, as we've just discussed.
