Anyone here tried the Vuelta Abajo ligero from WLT? I haven't seen any reports on it.

A seed company describes it thusly: "Vuelta Abajo is an heirloom oriental variety that has has been grown in the Vuelta region of Cuba for many generations. The leaves have good elasticity making them excellent for use as cigar wrappers. When grown in full sun and in soil with good nitrogen levels, one of the most potent oriental tobaccos known with nicotine levels at 4.6%."

I'm not sure if I've ever used an Oriental before. This seems to be the same thing as "Turkish."

I asked for a sample from Don and received one in an order a few months back. I haven't rolled anything with it yet though. I'm open to suggestions on what to do with it and am happy to provide feedback

Okay. Smell it cold, then light a rolled up leaf piece and take a hit from the smoke and tell me what you get. Put a match to an unrolled side and see if it burns on its own, spreading out to the edges. What are your feelings on the smoke and the burn. Thanks.

I will do this tonight after work and provide feedback

Pulled from the bag, he only sent two whole leaves and they are very dry. I took a half leaf out and it is very dry so it is hydrating. Initial aroma is straight barnyard which excites me

Taste: somewhat earthy, pleasant, smooth. Zero spice. Does not seem strong at all but what I smoked wasnt large and it could be deceiving.

The burn test: it is not very burny, but placed right in your bunch wont be an issue.

Thanks. Sounds mostly negative, but I'll grab a pound.

Is that the VA Criollo Ligero you're talking about?
I got a quarter pound of that and hate it.

OTOH, I'm a seco sicko. I keep trying ligeros and hate them all.

phew

You want mine?

It's not listed as a criollo, vuelta abajo is the varietal but if you have criollo ligero you don't want I use lots of the stuff. I could see myself using this vuelta abajo quite a bit as well

I don't say it's listed that way.
But the bag is labelled that way.

& it's dry
Smells sweet tho.

I'll dampen it enough to fold down small right now & shoot it out to you.

Shoot me some notes if you dont mind. I have a couple, but not as much as I want. My signature flavors always wind up being more sweet.
What are the couple you have? I'm seeing "pepper" consistently listed in my notes for blends with pcl (lo piloto ligero) (biasing white), esteli ligero, and specifically "black pepper" for the Ometepe ligero.

The piloto ligero I have only gotten baking spice, but that could be my blending. I haven't tried the ometepe yet. The piloto viso with a San Andre's wrapper has given me the most spice of anything yet.

Is that the WLT PCL? I ask because you also mention the pc viso, and LO doesn't sell a pc viso... I'll roll something like 1 PCL, 1 EsteliL, and 1 Honduran seco today and give it a toke and report back. Would probably need condega to balance it with sweetness. Maybe I'll do one with condega and one without...
