Really depends on the game and the location I am hunting..

I've got a custom SR Mauser in 7x57 that I built that I really like for deer and pigs.. its a short gun and is handy in a blind or a stand and is quick to shoulder on a spot-n-stalk type hunt.. but its not the most accurate gun in my safe.. I generally wont take it if I think shots are going to exceed 150 yards..

Ive also got a compact 308 that is a handy stand/blind gun thats good for deer and pigs

7mm WSM is my go-to for elk.. but I wouldnt hesitate to take my longer full size 308 either on an elk hunt..

There also a 35 Whelen, a 30-06, a 375 H&H, the 416T, a .243, a .223, a 44 mag carbine, and my old faithful Ithaca 37 12 GA in the safe to chose from depending on what is being hunted and where Im doing the hunting..

My wife honestly has a bigger arsenal than I do.. She's got a 223, 243, 270, 2x 308's, 35 Whelen, a 300 H&H and a couple of other things in there.. plus 4 different shotguns, and I think she's up to a half dozen pistols now..

(none of this includes the commiserate .22LRs, AR15's, self defense type hand guns, etc... the above is just the "hunting" arsenal...)

Specific to Africa hunting, in the past I have taken my 375 H&H. My wife has taken each of her 308's on different occasions. The 375 H&H is the Win 70 classic mentioned above. Her 308's are both rugers. The one she took earlier this year is a M77 FTW varient.

For this coming trip I will be taking the 416T. Im pretty sure the wife will be taking her 300 H&H. She's intending on going after some large bodied plains game (eland, etc)..

My 416 is a custom built LR Mauser. Her 300 H&H is a custom built on a P17 Enfield action.

Im a big fan of the old school mauser action and have built several rifles on both LR and SR actions over the years.. I find them exceptionally well suited for most big game hunting...

Big respect for the classic rifles in the classic chamberings.

It can get expensive really quick when it comes to guns... you can also build one for really cheap (>$300) if that’s your thing... I went all out on this build and it runs great suppressed and unsuppressed

One of my nephews is an Asian Water Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). I helped raise him from a pup. And yes he trained under saddle because we are idiots in the desert. May I introduce you to Fred.

"my nephew is a water buffalo" should be your profile tagline or signature..

Enlightening though, I'd been sensing a lot of Bull$hi*...

300 blackout I built a while back.
Nice! Canned life is where it's at. SiCo Hybrid?
Loading your own rounds? If so how much?

Stupid Tapatalk
Have not started loading my own rounds yet... Will prob go down that road soon tho.
Blackout is one of the few things that can make handloading a cost benefit. (huge benefit in the obscure and big cartridges that @mdwest likes)

But it's still worth it for the enjoyment, accuracy, and personalization factors. That is if you really love it.

It's really nice to be able to dial in a load.

But I did manage to catch a deal on a case of federal suppressor 300 that was cheaper than I could load it hopefully those deals will become more common.

That's my favorite breed of designer dog available today. If you cross a Bulldog and a Shih Tzu and you get a Bull$hi*

Absolutely true...

For big bores there is a significant cost savings.. A box of Barnes TSX factory 375 H&H ammo is about $80.. I can load the same round, using the premium Barnes TSX projectile, etc to the same specs as the factory ammo for about $35..

With the 416 Taylor its even more dramatic.. there are very, very few factory load options for 416 T.. you essentially have to go to very small companies that do premium loads.. and youre looking at $120 or more a box on average.. I can load a box of premium 416 T myself though for about $45...

I hit the range again, this time with the wife. The rifle was fun while I had it but she's now claimed it for her own.
She didn't care for the scope I had on it and demanded I put on the one she got for her birthday.
She just appropriated your painstakingly built 6.8?

I usually wish my wife would shoot more, but I guess I best be glad she's just happy with what I buy and build for her... ;)
