So for the last 14 days of the year I threw around the idea of grabbing 14 cigars and doing a mini review on each one everyday. So here are 14 cigars that are more sentimental too me to do some mini highlights on as my last of the year.
So, first off, #14
AVO Limited edition 2008 Toro
Everyone loves some yellow cello...
Pre-light: dry too the touch which isn't surprising after almost 6 years; very rich aroma on the wrapper with a super sweet tobacco on the foot.
Opening: Very nice nutty, rich, creamy tobacco flavor; very mild strength-wise. Just a touch of spice; more of a white pepper, sharp but not lingering and very faint.
1st 3rd: Medium bodied; all the previous flavors are present and mingling beautifully. The only negative flavor that joined was a paper-y flavor (signature on the davidoff family; not my favorite note) spice built slightly and the age of the cigar is showing beautifully; flavors are on the palate and gone very quickly leaving you with a "fresh" palate without any lingering harshness.
2nd 3rd: No real change (which isn't bad) I can say that smoking fast is punishing on the palate and flavor of the cigar; I sped up slightly and was met with some bitterness for a brief time.
Final 3rd: Paper-y quality is there and gone and has less of an impact I the flavor creating a very enjoyable end too the smoke.
93/100 for the sole reason that an hour after I was done I wanted to light another one up.... I was going to say 90'ish at first
Sentimental explanation: I purchased these a few years ago from a shop that was closing as the owner (not a very knowledgable smoker or owner) was trying to convey the best he could that this cigar was very balanced and nice. I could tell the passion he had coming through despite his impending closure and lack of knowledge and was moved and grabbed a couple; not at all regretting that decision.
EDIT: Would also like the mention the crazy amount of delicate notes this cigar has; after a meal, as the second of the day, etc. This is cigar would be wasted. Clean palate and time to smoke are critical in "getting" what this cigar is about. Aged Davidoff/Avo products are crazy good, but also easily overwhelmed. Take a day or two off smoking, and grab one in the morning and revist what a delicate cigar can do as it builds in flavor and body over the course of its burn, remember what a great mild and well constructed cigar can do.
