  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I haven't done a review in a very long time...so I'm going to make it a comeback with 2 reviews at once.

Cigar #1 - Don Pepin Garcia Invictos (Blue Label Robusto)

I had this cigar after lunch.

Construction was pretty spot on. Had a light barnyard pre-light aroma. Good pre-light draw. The first inch was pretty bland and light in smoke density and flavor. After the first inch the smoke got alot more dense and the flavor became much more intense. However, the cigar stuck with one flavor throughout. It lacked the depth and complexity I strive for in a good cigar. The most pronounced flavor I could pick out was a strong (very strong) leather taste. If I've ever tasted leather in a cigar, this was it. It wasn't the spice bomb I was expecting, but rather just boomed with this overwhelming leather flavor. I smoked it close to the band hoping for a realization of something more promising, but it never delivered. Ash held amazingly long and it never had burn problems, it's only saving grace.

Strength- 6
Body - 5
Flavor - 4

I give this cigar a 6 (out of 10)

Cigar #2

I had this cigar after work on the drive home.

Tatuaje Havana VI Nobles (Red Label Robusto)

Construction was very good, slightly cracked foot and head looked a little messy, but nothing to complain about. Pre-light aroma was nothing special and didn't have any distinct boquet to it. Pre-light draw was excellent. The first inch of this cigar was also less than average. (On a personal note, in the interest of full disclosure, I rarely find the first inch of any cigar amazing.) As the cigar found it's way to the halfway mark I kept feeling like this cigar was going to get better with each puff, but sadly I was dissapointed with every ensuing draw. It was like a cigar that wanted to be great, but didn't bring anything to the party. There was just a slight flavor to it that I couldn't pinpoint...but if this cigar had more of whatever it was that I was getting a hint of it could have been great. This was a diet-spice cigar. It was like a cigar that was born to be powerful but cut short. Not my favorite.

Strength - 6
Body - 6
Flavor - 5

I give this cigar a 6.5 (out of 10)

I have another Nobles in the top shelf of my cabinet. I might have to pull it out in 6 months and give it a try. I really feel that this cigar could be great, it is just lacking so much of something...maybe age will do it justice.

Sad to say that I haven't enjoyed these as much as some of you other BOTL's that rave about them. I have a few other Tat and Don Pepin products in the cab. My next Don Pepin will be a JJ Maduro..my next Tatuaje will probably be a Reserva J21. I'll update!

Good reviews! It definitely sounds like you're not too into the Pepin/Tat phenomenon that's sweeping the world. I've only had one Tatuaje, and I loved it. Can't say anything about the Pepin line though.

Good reviews, Jason. I do find though, that the first inch, although not amazing, is often a portent of wonderful things to come. . .:glassesgr

Tat's, especially the regular havana line, have a very smooth taste all the way through the cigars. You have to be in the mood for them. Let's say you are going into the humidor looking for something spicy, and with some edge, this will not be the one to grab. I find that they are very leathery, woody, and straightforward with a smoked Brie cheese like funkiness through the back of the throat and exhale. I find that some cigars that have a lot of spice and multiple profiles are rough around the edges. These are smooth, if a little un-exciting. I guess you have to be in the mood.
