  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

2 trips, 2 Xikars give me trouble

As earlier noted, my Stratosphere was apparently afraid of heights on my trip to NM and now my XTX double just shit the bed here in the Outer Banks. No spark at all. Wasn't dropped or anything. Kept in the case they sent me 100% of the time when not in use and in my pocket as well, albeit, in the case. 2 trips where cigars were to be enjoyed and 2 failures by my Xikars. Strike 2, you're out Xikar. Sure, I'll take it back and get a replacement when I get back from vacation but great warranty or not, I'll never recommend them again. Hell, both of my $20 Firebirds have been more reliable than these goddamn Xikars. Rant over.

A buddy of mine recently picked up a Xikar, used it for a day, then it quit working, so he brought it back and picked up another Xikar via the warranty. Used it for a day and then it stopped working. Was filled with xikar butane even. Sounds like what you are going through too.

That's strange. I travel with mine religiously (on planes at least 2 times a week) and never a problem. I have I think 4 or 5.

Actually, Firebirds are exceptionally reliable, as long as you remember to activate the ignitor slowly. You have to give it a chance to get the gas flowing before sending a spark. FWIW. Also FWIW, I have never had a problem with any of my Xikar lighters. :dunno:

Sometimes I wonder if it's the lighter, or the owner. I bought my girlfriend a Xikar a few ago. She managed to break it fairly fast. I waited till I bought a new lighter, and at the same time exchanged hers for one of the same model. Hers ended up going out a month or so later, mine lasted several months at that point. It eventually broke and I just bought a new one. A year later I took the 2 broken lighters in, and swapped them both for a new model. Again, hers won't even light a few weeks later, and mine is still working.

I just don't know. The lighters aren't built nearly as well as they act like they are. When this one tanks out, I'm done. I want lighters that DON'T break.

I've found 2 lighters that I could take anywhere, and work at high-altitude here at home down to sea-level and spark every time. One is my Ronson, the other is this one from DealXtreme:

Neither more than $3/ea.

BTW: I have a Xikar Executive, and found it pretty finnicky as well, the only one I would put my faith in to light every time that I own is their tabletop triple-flame Liga Privada lighter.

Some people are really hard on their lighters, but I don't think that's the case with yours. They just make a lot of junk now, compared to what they used to. :disappoin

Definitely not the case here either. Hell, at $70 I gave that SOB the white glove treatment! Kept in the case and everything. The only thing I didn't do was wash and wax it in the driveway on the weekends! LOL!

Dupont extend. Not cheap but they last a long time. I've had mine 3 years with not a single issue. Works like it did the day I bought it. View attachment 23724
I have a lot of lighters, and the X-tend is the most reliable lighter I have ever owned. Plus it has a neat safety feature that won't let it light upside down. While that may sound silly, some lighters look pretty similar right side up and upside down, and my wife once burned her hand lighting a Xikar Executive the wrong end up.

I got fed up with wasting money on lighters that get battered about and then fail so I bought this for £3 off eBay

Love, Love, Love this cheep lighter! Probibly the same make/desighn as Steve's above. I've been though all the same issues with expensive lighters. I never could get myself to pay $200 for a lighter when that would buy a nice box of cigars. Anyways, why would you want to spend that on something that just creates fire? I have two lighters I use and have used for the last couple years with NO ISSUES!
The first is this lighter and the second is my Zippo lighter with a "Z-Plus Butane" insert.
However onto the topic I do know that Xikar will replace it for free as they do with any of there products. They have great customer service too.

I've yet to have a Xikar that won't light, now I've sent them back for cracked plastic or finish that wears down rather quickly, but they always light9If they've got fluid)! I've also got a few ronson, dealextreme and other cheap lighters. Love the dealextreme its got huge tank and for $1-$2 if it doesn't work no big deal toss it and grab another.

Hi. My name is Vic, and I'm a lighterholic. I can't help it. I just keep adding to the collection, and cheapies make it easy to feed my habit. So far, the most expensive lighter I have been able to bring myself to pay for is a duPont X-tend that I got on sale for $100. Although pricey, I have to admit that it's been worth every penny.
