I smoked one of these tonight, courtesy of one of my trades. When I laid this cigar out on my desk, my employees looked at it in awe. This cigar had a nice, dark wrapper. It almost looked like a maduro wrapper and had aromas of dark chocolate, spice, dark roasted coffee. The construction on this cigar was impeccable. Actually, this cigar is made in the El Rey de Los Habanos factory in Miami, by Don Pepin. Need I say more as to how this cigar was going to taste.
Going back into the construction of this cigar, nicely wrapper Nicaraguan wrapper which had some minor veins, oily and no construction issues. After cutting the cap with my Palio cutter, pre-light tastes of medium black pepper, dark chocolate and a slight hint of black licorice were present. I toasted this cigar and immediately, huge plumes of smokes emitted from this cigar, as did peppery spice. Hay, cedar and almonds also came from this cigar, which made this a nice complex blend. This cigar was definitely in medium body, but full flavored range. The ash was perfect, holding nice and tight with a light grey ash. There was a slight mottling of the ash, but this did not detract from the smoke at all. Huge plumes of smoke and a nice even burn were also key elements of this cigar.
The second third continued to produce a great amount of smoke. No burn issues and the flavored continued throughout this time I smoked this cigar. Same great flavors melded together to make this an enjoyable smoke.
As I hit the last third, the flavor remained complex with hints of chocolate, dark roasted coffee, nuts, hay and even cedar. The licorice came and went at times, as did another sweet flavor, which is reminiscent of sugar cane. This sweetness was not overpowering, but provided a nice addition to a good blend. The ash was good , as was the burn. No wrapper cracking from start to finish.
Overall, this was a terrific smoke, which provided me 70 minutes of enjoyment. One of my employees smoked a cigar with me and commented numerous times on how good this cigar smelled. The only issue that I had with this cigar is that I actually had to put it down since it got hot on my lips and fingers with 3/4" left. On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate this one as a 9.2.
These cigars are great now and I can imagine this one getting better with age. I will be buying more of these to enjoy more often. Another great Pepin cigar. Who says Im not a Pepin whore?
Thanks for taking the time to read this and hope that it helps!
