  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

A NC aging report. DL 600 Old band

There is always talk on botl about which NCs can hang with the test of time. Many names like Liga, Fuente and Tatuaje are always mentioned. It seems like the last few years a name that has dropped off a little is the LFD brands. While my time at the Burning Leaf was often spent smoking some of Littos fine creations. With the start of my CC smoking, LFDs have seemed to drop off my Radar. Tonight with the bitter cold I wanted to enjoy what was left of a bottle of 2012 George T Stagg. I knew I'd have to dig deep into the NC vino and see what I had buried in a mixed box. A LFD DL 600 caught my eye. I'm not quite sure what year it was but I'm thinking it was a 08 or close.
Prelight:
Very spicy on the tounge and lips. Very strong earth and Musroom. (Peaty smell)
Upon lighting:
Such a good room aroma, so complex.
First third:
Musrhoom, sweet cedar, STRONG almost overpowering barnyard/manure. I loved it couldn't stop smelling it! White pepper on tounge, lips and throat. Full body still after almost 4 years.
2nd third:
More cedar, earth and musrhoom. (Think of opening a Portebella package) Less spice now just in the backround.
final 3rd:
I swear to god for a couple mins someone just brewed a fresh pot of rich black coffee in the air! It also had a bitter chocolate sweetness to it. Not much spice left and that was ok.
This cigar transitioned thru the whole smoking experience. From spicy, earthy/barnyard/manure. To a rich black pot of coffee with bitter chocolate at the end. This cigar is a cigar that needs to be bought by the newer guys and laid to rest for a few years and then smoked. BUY THESE TO AGE GUYS! It truly was one of my favs so far this year and forced me to do a review again. No pics it was to good to ruin the experience.
What a cigar,
Jfire

Btw I think this DL 600 could of laid down a few more years and still have been just as good. Some cigars just have the balls to run with the bulls...... And the 2012 Stagg didn't suck!

sounds like a GREAT experience, and thanks for sharing it, man!

good point to underscore is this is just a little old unassuming regular production cigar. with patience you can go from good to wow if you can keep your mitts off stuff. remember when one of my locals were clearing out some leon jiminez that they had lost for a decade, little petit coronas that looked so gnarled but smoked like butter! miss those little guys. o)

they can't all turn into gems, but in many cases the difference between high end and regular production in NC is time (and marketing).

Funny I had a similar experience recently with (of all things) a brickhouse robusto. Picked up a box for like $70 so figured even if they sucked, I could hand them out to non-cigar smokers and not get too bent when they took two puffs and dumped it in my ashtray.

When I first tried one, I was severely underwhelmed. Threw the box back in the vino and pretty much forgot about them for the better part of two years or so. Dug out a couple not long ago and couldn't believe how much better they were. Just for shits and giggles, I pulled the band off one and gave it to wilfredsimpson to try -- he actually asked about halfway through if I had given him a Cuban! They definitely improved with age, much to my surpriese.

Thanks for the writeup Jfire - makes me want to keep my hands off more of my nc stuff...lol

Smoked my first lfd dl (toro sized one) a few months ago. Think it had a few months to a year on it. Absolutely loved it!! Totally agree with op. Looking forward to the few I have left including a couple chisels. If you are a full body type of guy and havent tried the lfd dl line I highly reccommend it! And cant beat the price these can be had for!

Thanks for the review! Did you smoke the maduro or the natural version?

I gotta say LFD produces some mighty fine smokes and every time I've had one I've enjoyed the crap out of it. I say to myself "Self, you have to remember to get more of these", but then I forget until I either smoke another one or a post like this comes up. Some brands just seem to be perpetually under appreciated.

Thanks for the great review. Inspired me to fire up an old yellowed LFD 2000 series. Fantastic smoke.

i've been finding the DL and the deiz from 05 have been outstanding. The cigars have really balanced and have tons flavor.
