  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

So I over the course of the last few months I have been having seriously horrible sinus issues...(not being able to taste for days at a time)
I figured why not cut out things one at a time to figure out if anything is helping. Sadly after much debate in my head. I have figured out that hops trigger my sinus issues.
Anyone else have this issue? I hate to admit this to myself

Don't have this problem and its the first I've heard of it. Maybe have an allergy specialist do the skin test to make sure? Hoppes are just a flowering vine, so anything is possible. My sinuses and head get jacked up if I have more than 2 hefeweizens. Something about the unfiltered and suspended yeast I guess.

Never heard of this... But I do know that Beer is a histamine, so I am not surprised.

I did have a friend who was allergic to hops but his allergy manifested itself in hives, 24 hour vomiting, and vertigo.

If you haven't seen an allergist, now's the time. I went to one a few years ago and was shocked to find I'm allergic to chicken, corn, onions, oregano and a few other things in the hey fever area. I finally bit the bullet about 2 months ago and have been "chicken" free and I have to say I feel better.

So get a professional opinion. It might be something else.

I plan on going to see a pro as soon as my "domestic partnership" with my girlfriend kicks in....she has amazing insurance through her work and I only had to live with her for 30 days to qualify as her "domestic partner"

Ok I am not absolutely sure it is hops..but I have noticed every time I drink beer(as opposed to other types of alcohol) my sinues get really really bad for a few days and can't taste anything.
I for sure am not calling it solved but will get it checked out asap. Maybe it is a yeast thing...or god I hate to even think of having to give up gluten(then I would be one of those annoying people)

I never saw a professional, but know I can't drink wheat beers. Swell up like a balloon and can't breathe that well. Plenty of other good beers to drink so no harm done.

I am allergic to hops as well. Just last night I drank a bunch of DFH 60 minutes at the bar and ended up with blurred vision, slurred speech, felt a little nausea and tried to take a fat chick home.

I figured out a couple months ago I am one of those annoying people. I've always had horrific gas and explosive BMs, never knew why. I cut everything out of my diet at the beginning of the year, and slowly added things back in. Once I had wheat again, bam, instant gas bloating intestinal discomfort and my wife's favorite, explosive bowel movements.

Sounds like a gluten intolerance and possibly Celiac Disease. My daughter was having a hard time with meals and we finally saw a specialist. Turns out if you have the disease it will shut down your digestive track and cause you to not absorb the good nutrients. Over time it causes permanent damage and is incurable. I wouldn't call it annoying though, that's a little unfair to those that have to deal with it for the rest of their lives.

I became significantly overweight... im 5' 11" and weighed 315 at my max. Im down 50 lbs since the beginning of the year. I at least have gluten intolerance, but from everything ive researched about celiac since experimenting on myself earlier in the year it takes a lot for them to diagnose you with it. I know when there is wheat in something... mild pain in the gut. I associated celiac with malnourisment and being severly underweight, but now Ive seen many studies indicating that many people are obese when diagnosed. I know what I need to eat now though... so no problems.

There is actually a strange French beer made without hops. I believe it was called Pschorr 22 or 32. Which stood for the number of herbal ingredients they used to replace the hops. I also have heard of Heather Ales which are brewed w/o hops. Might try these and see.
